When I answered, the person on the line spoke with an American accent and introduced himself as Frank Dale from Healey Associates in New York. He was asking specifically for my wife, claiming she owned shares in a US firm that Vodafone was apparently trying to take over aggressively, willing to pay a lot more than the shares were worth. He refused to discuss any details with me and insisted on speaking to my wife, who wasn’t around at the time. The whole thing felt fishy, especially since the info about the shares didn’t add up. Once I got her chatting about how scrip dividends can dilute share value and mentioned I work in accounting, she hung up abruptly, saying she’d send the details “in writing”. They said Vodafone shares were valued at £1, but their client was ready to pay anywhere between £7 and £15. Honestly, sounded too good to be true, but the story had just enough truth to catch me off guard. I quickly cut the call once I said I wasn’t selling any Vodafone shares... which I never even owned.
