Managed to dupe a mate out of £1,700.

While browsing the HP site to sort out an issue with my printer, I encountered a rather intrusive chat window. I detailed my predicament and was informed that I’d get a call back, which indeed happened. I was under the impression that I was communicating with HP or an accredited partner of theirs. To my surprise, it turned out to be iTech Services. They flagged several supposed issues with my computer that, after digging deeper, were simply non-issues (like claims about my local network being insecure and erroneous alerts in the Event Viewer that they exaggerated into a major crisis). Naively, I ended up purchasing their $199 repair package. They took remote control of my PC and, among other dubious activities, left an icon on my desktop labelled "SSL Guard.exe." This was supposedly a firewall, though it turned out to be just a mere icon with no actual program linked to it. A scan with Malwarebytes soon flagged it as a Trojan and put it in quarantine!

I’ve received calls from elderly folks attempting to coax me into signing up for a tech support package for around £200, claiming they can remote into my computer to resolve my problems. It's quite unclear whether they're genuinely trying to assist or if they have ulterior motives, like swiping my information. It leaves one pondering, doesn't it?

I found the whole call quite dodgy, to be honest. The bloke claimed his name was John Stone and mentioned he was employee number 1526. When I probed a bit further, he said he was ringing from Canada. However, the following day I did a bit of sleuthing on his number and, lo and behold, it pinpointed him in India. Quite the conundrum, isn’t it?

I just received a call from someone pretending to be from technical support for computers. It was clearly dodgy and felt like a scam.
