Our company got a phone call from some guy called "Aaron" who said he was ringing about our credit card machine. I told him we weren’t interested because I assumed he was trying to push his services on us. Then he went on about us being charged too much over the past three months for the machine. What’s odd is we changed to different software ages ago and haven’t even used that terminal for over half a year, maybe even longer, since we process cards online now. Aaron wanted me to send a statement from our old processor so they could supposedly give us a refund for the extra charges... total scam to me. I took down his email and details and said I’d check it out. He said he’d ring back in an hour, but never did. His email is [email protected] if anyone’s interested.

Totally dodgy call claiming to be from "Merchant Services." Don't trust it for a second!

Had a few calls from someone saying they're our credit card merchant, but it's clear they're not. They kept ringing and acted pretty pushy. Total scam, don't trust them!

I got a call earlier from a number telling me I had some kind of claim pending and to ring back on that number. When I phoned, they said I owed £6000 to T-Mobile from a £1000 bill. I barely remember having T-Mobile around 2006 anyway. They say this debt is showing up on my credit file. I checked all three major credit agencies back in 2013 and there was nothing from T-Mobile. I just ran another check today and still no accounts in collections or anything like that. So I really don’t get how they say it’s on my credit report...

First, they push you to confirm you owe money, then finally they mention what the debt actually is.

So, I got a call from this law firm down in Southern California that deals with civil cases. They were representing Centurylink Communications about a debt I owed. At first, they came off pretty cold and straight to the point, barely showing any emotion regardless of what your situation might be. Honestly, I thought it was some kind of scam and hung up on them on my first try. Then I spoke to a debt lawyer who told me even if the debt wasn’t showing on my credit report, if I can’t prove it’s not mine, it’s better to settle. Apparently, going to court could mean I’d be stuck not just with the debt but court fees too, if they had any proof I opened the account. So I gave them a ring back and managed to settle for about 500 quid less than their original demand. Oh, and I also learned that the statute of limitations starts ticking from the last payment or when you last acknowledged the debt, not from when you opened the account like I always thought.
