Some bloke rang me claiming to be Richard Ben, said he's got a badge number GOC 9774. He went on about me having 25 bank accounts, mostly in Montreal, supposedly involved in over 10 million dollars worth of dodgy business - money laundering and a bunch of other criminal stuff he mentioned. Said I'd be passed onto the RCMP straight after the call. Then he asked for the last three digits of my SIN, my address, and full name to 'confirm' these bank accounts. Felt right dodgy if you ask me.

I got a call about my Social Insurance Number, but they didn't even know my name! I mean, if you can't say my name, how do you know it's actually my number - be it phone or SIN? I asked them where exactly they were calling from because there was a lot of noise in the background. They said "The Ottawa Location," but that made no sense to me. I live in a small town not far from Ottawa, and there are several Service Canada offices around here. Saying "The Ottawa Location" really doesn’t help narrow it down at all. Besides, during Covid-19, the legit CRA folks are working from home, not from call centres. If they’re claiming to be in an Ottawa office, that's suspicious as all those offices were closed due to lockdown. So, watch out and don’t get caught out by these sorts of calls!

Got a call from this number with a robotic voice telling me to press 1 so I did, just to see what would happen. Suddenly it says the RCMP are coming to see me! Yeah right! I told them the RCMP don’t bother me - I live on a First Nation reserve and my dad’s a police sergeant anyway. Said I’d ring him to check if the RCMP were actually after me. Then I asked the caller’s name, he said “Mark Hanson” and gave me some 1800 number, which wasn’t even the same as the number showing up on my phone. What a pair of muppets!

I pressed 1, and this bloke answered, giving me a badge number and telling me there’s a warrant out for my arrest. He warned my SIN card and bank account would be frozen if I didn’t cooperate. Then he started asking for my bank details. When I asked what info he had on me, he got annoyed and said something like, “Why are you doubting me when I’m here to help?” I got really wary especially when he couldn’t say the name of my bank, Simplii Financial, properly. He wanted me to take him off speakerphone, but I just hung up. He rang back a few times, but I didn’t pick up and no messages were left after that. Seems like he realised I wasn’t going to fall for it.

I've been getting calls from this number quite a bit, and at first I assumed it was actually Service Canada because the caller ID shows something like Edmonton hermitage service canada, which seemed legit. But after looking it up here, loads of others are reporting the same calls. I've tried blocking it but the calls keep coming through. What happens is the scammers use a spoofed number, so it seems like the call is from a trusted source, but really it’s not. They’re just trying to hide where they’re calling from.

I phoned back and my stomach dropped when I heard “Government of Canada.” I’d heard about these sorts of scams before but never actually got one. When they show 1800OCanada though, it’s easy to fall for it! It was really stressful. I called the number just to investigate, and thankfully they didn’t ask me for any personal info. I definitely wouldn’t have given anything. The person I spoke with explained that 1800OCanada is actually just a call centre that only takes incoming calls - they don’t make calls out. It’s just for government-related services and info. I’m in Edmonton, Alberta, and apparently that’s a spot getting targeted lately.

Honestly, just block the number and forget about it. It’s a complete rip-off.

This number showed up as a missed call when I got up. Decided to ring back, and it sounded like some official from the Canadian government. Didn’t want to take any chances, so I just ended the call. I checked the number online earlier, and it came up as Canadian government too. Bit baffled by it all. I’ve now blocked the number and activated the block for unknown callers.

Got a call just now from this number. It was some automated voice claiming to be from the government, saying my Social Insurance Number was blocked because of some fraud or crime stuff. They said to press 1 for more info. I just ended the call though. Definitely a scam. What jerks.

Got a call from this number while I was at work, on my work phone. They started saying something about my SIS number being suspended. I didn’t bother to listen much and just ended the call straight away since the phone is part of my company’s business plan.
