Two texts popped up asking me to verify I’m a UK citizen. I tried sorting it out with Barclays through their online chat but no luck. Really just wanted to know which number they send texts from. Found out here that it’s actually a scam. Watch out, folks!

Just like everyone else, I got a load of nonsense about my tax status supposedly from Barclays - a bank I've never had any dealings with! I’m sure the number they want you to ring back is just some dodgy premium rate line trying to con you.

I got a couple of texts on my old phone number I don’t even use anymore, saying they were from Barclays. They asked me to confirm if I’m only a tax resident in the UK and not a US citizen - just to reply yes or no. The messages were from the 12th and 17th of December 2022. I replied using my new number saying I only get calls and texts but don’t use it otherwise. I also told them I was born here. Now I’m a bit uneasy they might have my new number and worry they could try to send some kind of virus to my phone.

Yesterday I got a message like that, but is it really from the bank? It said something like “Thanks. We're going to post you a form because we need extra details about your tax residency. Please complete it and send it back. Regards, your Barclays team.” Seems a bit off to me.

I got this text that lots of others seem to have got too, asking if I’m just a UK tax resident and not a US citizen. It showed up as from BARCLAYS and asked me to reply ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to 65052. I was about to respond but then a message popped up telling me I’d be charged for sending the text, so I stopped right away. Just watch out for these!

This seemed really dodgy to me too. I received a text supposedly from Barclays requesting that I reply to 65052 and confirm my residency in the UK. Banks wouldn't just settle for a text message reply, surely. They'd already have this info or, if they didn’t, would ask for ID like a passport or driving licence, not just a quick text. Definitely felt sketchy.
