61998 Summary (Read all comments)

Phone number ☎️ 61998 👆 is reported as a number predominantly linked to scam activity where callers impersonate BT, sending texts about broadband faults or complaints to mislead recipients. While some users acknowledge it as a legitimate BT customer care or proactive service contact number used for fault diagnosis and engineer appointment bookings, many express suspicion due to unsolicited messages requesting replies to premium-rate texts or links. There is evidence of both genuine BT communications and fraudulent attempts exploiting BT’s identity, including texts referencing non-existent problems or unusual appointment offers. Recipients are advised to verify messages independently via official BT channels, avoid responding to unknown prompts, and exercise caution due to risk of phishing, premium charges, or data breaches. Overall, vigilance is essential as legitimate BT interactions coexist with convincing scams using similar numbers.

Seemed fishy so I checked it out on this site. Dodged it for sure!

Got a message from this number saying there was an issue with my network and to reply for more info. Then, literally a minute later, I got texts pretending to be from BT and Openreach, both asking me to respond to some numbers mentioned in other reviews here. I haven’t had any issues at all and never shared my phone number with anyone, so it seems they picked it completely at random. This is definitely a scam.

This seems like a classic scam related to a dodgy phone line. BT haven’t had any faults logged on their end. Definitely be very careful with this one.

This number didn’t look like any typical scam line. Loads of messages kept coming through from it, supposedly from a "BT diagnostic bot," claiming they were checking issues I'd never heard of. It really threw me off since I didn’t know scammers used stuff like this until EE warned me it was dodgy. I've gone ahead and blocked it now.

This morning, I got a message from this number but there was nothing to prove it was really from the person or company it claimed to be. Plus, I know that company wouldn't reach out using that number. So, I chose not to respond.

Got a call from someone saying they're with BT. They asked me to schedule a broadband repair appointment through a link they sent. Seems dodgy to me since my internet's working fine anyway. Probably one of those scams.

Got a text sayin my BT parcel is on the way, which is funny cos it’s already been delivered and my broadband’s all set up and working fine! Deleted the message and reported it, but no reply yet and no parcel in sight. Proper glad I don’t use my phone for any banking stuff!

This looks like a scam claiming they've found an issue with my internet connection.

I dont think its a scam, if it is its pretty clever. When you ring BT to check your line, their automated system says they’ll send you a text, and it comes through instantly. Nothing dodgy going on, but BT does charge you for the texts, and you get a few messages after the initial one, so it can add up a bit.

This looks like a total scam, even tho loads of the comments here dont say it proper. Dont reply or text that number.

My wife got a text like this on her phone today and she isn't even the person named on our BT account! It said, "Hello from BT, we’ve been trying to reach you regarding switching to digital voice... please get in touch within 14 days to confirm a delay." Sounds like a total scam to me, and what’s worse, it might even be a breach of data privacy!

Got this message claiming to be from BT: "Hello from BT. We've been in touch about switching you over to our Digital Voice service. We understand it might not be the best moment for everyone, so we're checking if you're all set. If you want to go ahead, just reply READY and we'll handle everything. If you're not sure or want to wait, no need to reply - your current service will stay the same, and we'll touch base in 14 days to confirm the delay." Sounds dodgy to me, watch out!

Got a text from this number saying it was BT. They said they wanna send an engineer to fix my slow internet. My broadband has been slow recently, so it seemed legit. They were actually trying to set up a time for a BT engineer to come by, through follow-up texts. Plus, I got a proper BT email with a case number too.

This is a legit BT text for anyone needing an engineer to fix slow internet. You’ll get another text from “BT_SMS” to prove it’s really BT and to give you a reference number. Actually, the text I got said: “To be sure it’s BT contacting you, check details at bt.com/cust-txt-help. You can also track your case at www.bt.com/faults or via the BT App using your reference ….(not shared here for safety).”

I got a couple of messages and emails telling me to book a free engineer visit by texting “NEXT” to get the earliest appointment nearby or “MORE” to see two options. Then I got a follow-up saying they needed to send an engineer to fix my broadband. Thing is, my BT broadband and phone line were working fine, so I was really suspicious this was some sort of scam and chose not to reply.

I rang BT customer service and was told they’d send me a text to run some fault checks and arrange for an engineer visit. I had to reply back to the message from this number, and it mentioned I could be charged for replying :((( really annoyed. But it seems legit, it’s a number BT confirms on their site.

Got a text saying it’s BT telling me my Wi-Fi setup isn’t working well and offering a free extra Wi-Fi disc if I reply YES. I did reply YES and got a message back saying they received it and will get back soon, normally within a few hours. Then another message confirmed I won’t get any more BT texts unless it’s about my account. Bit worried now, not sure if it’s a scam or legit.

Not sure what that was. I was messaging my daughter when suddenly a box popped up saying 61998 asking me to open it. I ignored it. Then my message turned grey and disappeared completely. Very strange! Also been getting loads of calls claiming to be from BT but it's a robotic woman speaking. Best thing is to just hang up straight away.

This is the BT Customer Service text line, mostly used to let you know they’ll be calling you soon or if they couldn’t reach you. You can easily search "Got a text from 61998 or 60204, is it really BT or spam?" and it will take you to BT’s official website confirming this is legit. BT has a proactive team that try to solve slow internet problems, and they’re located in Belfast. Several BT Customer Care departments use this number when texting customers back and forth.

BT claim it's not from them yet their site shows the same number! First message said they'd send an engineer for free to sort broadband issues (I never said there was a problem). Then a call came, caller just used my last name and English sounded off. Feels like someone's messing with an actual BT thread but BT refuses to let their fraud team get involved. Best to ignore. Don’t reply.

got a text from bt delivery bit that told me to ring a different number to set up an engineer. the number they gave was 0800800150, and I’m not really sure if it’s legit. I feel like it’s probably bt since they never ring about faults. the 0800 number looks like a proper bt one tho, so i’m kinda confused what’s happening.

This number claims to be BT but it’s actually one of those premium rate scams. I got in touch with BT and they said it’s definitely fraudulent. What’s weird is how they knew I had reported a problem with my landline? Plus, I never gave BT my mobile number to begin with. Strange bit of info sharing there!
