I had a similar call but this time it was a woman with a strong accent. When I tried to explain what "verification" actually means and asked her what info she had on me, she told me to stop wasting her time and just ended the call. They've called me three times now. --Totally a scam--

Just had a call like this from a bloke with a really strong accent. He claimed to be ringing from Washington DC, saying the government was handing out $9,000 to some people. He asked for my full name, how old I was, if I’m married, and whether I have a bank account or credit card. He even gave me some sort of ID and manager number. Honestly, it’s a total con, so don’t even bother talking to them! If they say you’ve gotta pay anything upfront, it’s definitely a scam - just hang up straight away!

I got a call too, the bloke had a thick accent and was talking about some £9,000 grant. Rang him back and it turned out to be the same person.

Haha, so I got calls for a few days from someone claiming to be from the Federal Grants office. Each time, the guy kept messing up my name - sounded like he wasn’t local. After the sixth call, I decided to ring them back. The bloke who picked up, also obviously not from here, denied calling me in the first place. I told him I was just returning their call, and suddenly he started swearing at me, calling me a “bloody idiot” or worse. I told him I’d report him to the watchdog, but he didn't care a bit. When I asked for the company's name, after a long pause, he said “Federal Government Grants Department” and confirmed he worked for the government. I nearly dropped me tea at that point - calling me names while representing the gov? The guy even gave a fake name, “Randy Miller” or something like that. Thankfully, I managed to record part of the call. Truly ridiculous behaviour.

Got a call from a guy with a thick Punjabi accent (he actually said that was his name). Tried to pitch me some school grant, but kept cutting me off all the time. I had to ask him to say it again a few times just to drag the call out (always fun to waste their minutes). Then I let him know how rude he was being. Told him I’m far too clever to fall for that kind of trick, and if he really thinks I’m daft, he’s got another think coming. He went completely silent after that, still on the line but didn’t say a thing. I get a real kick out of shutting down these idiots.

Just like last time, they claimed I qualified for £9,000. I asked what specific group I was in -- like paid taxes, retired folks, or those struggling financially. The guy couldn’t give me a clear answer. Then he accused me of not paying attention, but I pointed out he wasn’t actually responding to what I was asking. When I told him to stop reading from a script, he denied having one.

I got a call saying I’d been given a grant of £9,000 and they wanted to know how I wanted the money. I asked if there was a catch and they said I had to pay £250 first, which they’d return later. When I asked for a number to ring them back, the guy with a thick accent just said to check the caller ID. I quickly googled the number on my laptop and that’s when I saw all the warnings about it being a con. Seriously, don’t get caught out - it’s a total scam!

I played along and said just post it instead, trying to see what they were after. They already had my name and address, so I got suspicious. They asked how old I was, and I said I wasn’t sharing that. Then they wanted to know if I was married or single - I told them that was none of their business. I ended the call straight away. Feels like a total scam, and I won’t be giving any details to strangers on the phone again.

I rang the number back and a lady answered, but her accent was so strong I struggled to make out what she was saying. When I asked what company she belonged to, she mentioned some kind of department, but I wasn’t sure. I pressed her again, then she just said “That is wrong” and ended the call. Pretty annoying spam, honestly.

Got a call today from a woman telling me I’d won £9,000 from the Government. She kept checking if I was still on the line. I asked her who exactly was handing out this free cash - the Prime Minister or what? She said she needed to check my identity first. I wasn’t about to give any details.
She sounded really dazed or something.
Why do these calls always sound like they’re from overseas?
Since when has the Government just handed out free money?
It just doesn’t add up to me.
