Despite some thinking 191 is safe, there’s clear consensus it’s used by scammers to trick people into sharing sensitive info or transferring money.

A bloke rang me saying he was from the Victoria Police and that they'd arrested my niece using my credit cards. I kept asking questions and he kept dodging them but eventually gave me his name, badge ID and a crime reference. He told me to ring the police on the non-emergency number, 191. Of course, I didn’t call and decided to have a look online instead.

The customer support was awful, honestly, chatting online was way more helpful.

#### Someone rang up pretending to be the police, claiming they’d got my nan’s grandson in custody and had her bank cards. Told her to ring 191 to check if it was really the police, which she did. Thankfully, she didn’t hand over any info.

Saw this number pop up on my recent calls but I can’t for the life of me remember who it was. Someone should make a service that tells you who you’ve called before!

This is connected to an earlier warning. The caller claimed to be from Hammersmith police station and said they had someone in custody who claimed to be our grandson and wanted to use our credit card. The call lasted quite a while and they told us to ring 191 and report to our local police. Before we could call, they phoned back insisting it was our local station. They kept asking loads of questions until my husband stopped answering, thinking it was a scam, and then they hung up straight away. We reported it to the police on 101, not 191!

Avoid this number at all costs - They rang my dad pretending to be Hammersmith police, saying there was someone arrested for credit card fraud with the same last name as him. They claimed this person had used my dad’s address as bail and asked if he knew them. They told him to ring back on 191 to confirm it was the police and sort out potential fraud issues. My dad did call back without checking if 191 is actually a police number (!?), and they started asking about any strange transactions on his bank account.

Just seen this on the telly, some scammer is tricking folks into handing over loads of money, telling them to call 191 to prove they’re the cops and that money needs moving. Don’t pick up and make sure you tell the police.
