I had quite the curious experience today! At precisely 1:13 and 1:14 PM, I received three calls from a No Caller ID. I was right in the middle of a meeting, with my phone silenced, so of course, I missed them. A bit later, I glanced at my device only to find the three missed calls along with a text from the ATO. The message addressed me by name and instructed me to get in touch regarding an inquiry dated 18/10/2023. Apparently, I needed to return their call by 20/10 using the number 1300 650 286, complete with specific calling hours, who to ask for, and to input the PIN 1275. However, since I don’t have any outstanding matters or debts with the ATO, I’ll be steering clear of returning that call.

If you happen to receive a call from this number, exercise caution with the caller. While it may display as an ATO line, once you enter the PIN, you’re met with a rather shoddy recorded message. The name mentioned is Gibbson Torykali, delivered in an Indian accent, followed by an American accent saying, “...can’t take your call right now, please leave a message.” I don’t want to fall into the trap of generalising, but it seems all the scam calls I've received feature voices with Indian accents. It’s my suspicion that if you leave a message asking them to return your call, they will indeed do so, but don’t expect it to be an actual ATO representative on the other end. I dedicated almost 40 minutes speaking with a genuine ATO agent using the number 13 28 61, and they could not find any trace of me being contacted by a representative associated with them.

I received a call claiming to be from the Tax Office. The chap on the other end had a proper Aussie twang and was incredibly persuasive. He was quite affable, too. Just a word of caution - be wary of falling for it. They even send seemingly authentic messages days prior to the phone call, so when you request verification, you might find messages that look like they’re from the ATO showing up.

I got a message that urged me to ring the ATO and make sure I had my ABN at the ready. To clarify, I don’t have any tax matters to sort out. The tax office typically sends correspondence through the post rather than making unsolicited calls without prior notice. They provided the number 1300 650 286, which I know belongs to the ATO, but then they asked me to contact someone named Jody Panizza on extension 2475, but oddly, not on Wednesdays. And really, when did the ATO start their day at half past seven in the morning?
