Today around 1.13 and 1.14pm, I noticed three calls from a No Caller ID while I was in a meeting with my phone on silent, so I didn’t hear the ringing. Later on, I saw missed calls plus a text claiming to be from the ATO. The message used my name and told me to ring them about an enquiry from 18/10/2023, saying I needed to call before 20/10 on 1300 650 286, follow specific instructions and enter PIN 1275. Since I don’t owe anything or have any issues with the ATO, I’ve decided not to return the call.

If this number rings you, be cautious. It shows up as an ATO contact, but after entering the PIN, you get a badly recorded message with someone saying a name that sounds like "Gibbson Torykali" in an Indian accent. Then, the message switches to an American accent saying something like "can't take your call right now, please leave a message." I don't want to be rude by pointing out the accent, but every scam call I've had sounds like it's from someone speaking with an Indian accent. If you leave a voicemail, they might call back, but it definitely won't be anyone actually working for the ATO. I even spent nearly 40 minutes on the phone with the official ATO number, 13 28 61, and they had no record whatsoever of anyone from their office trying to contact me. So, just be careful with this number.

The caller claimed to be from the tax department and spoke with a spot-on Aussie accent, sounding really polite. He seemed quite genuine but watch out, it’s a scam. Before calling, they sometimes send what look like official messages so when you ask for proof, you find those texts on your phone and think it’s for real, just like from the ATO. Don’t fall for it!

Got a message telling me to ring the ATO and have my ABN ready - but I don’t have any problems with tax.
The tax office always sends official letters, not random texts from unknown numbers.
They gave me the number 1300 650 286, which is legit for the ATO, but then they wanted me to ask for Jody Panizza on extension 2475 - except not on Wednesdays? Also, since when does the ATO start work at 7.30 in the morning? Doesn’t add up to me.

I just had a call from this number, but it’s not the first time. Over the last week, I’ve got the same pre-recorded message, but from different phone numbers each time. They didn’t use my name, instead calling me “Dear citizen” which was my first warning sign. Then they claimed the ATO flagged me as a tax fraudster, which is ridiculous because I always file my taxes properly - that’s red flag number two. The message told me to get back to them, but genuine tax officials would ring and speak directly, not ask for a return call. So, that’s another warning sign. Also, I’ve never heard of any government agency threatening arrest just for not answering a call, so I’m calling that red flag number four. The last time, the call came from a blocked number, and the time before, it was from 011161111. Same rubbish message every time.

SCAM ALERT - some bloke rang me saying I owed nearly $4,000 for supposedly ripping off the tax office, apparently they found out through some ‘Informant Program’. He said if I didn’t pay up, the arrest warrant wouldn’t be lifted and my charges wouldn’t get reduced. When I asked for proof of this debt, he went all aggressive and started shouting about the police coming over, then just hung up. I was pretty scared at first, but thankfully I had the internet handy and stumbled across sites like this one. Much appreciated!

Got a message from this number, so I looked it up on 'who is' and apparently it’s a real ATO number. But it’s not actually the ATO calling. I’d already caught a warning about this on telly one evening, telling folks not to reply or share any details. A few days back, I also got an email from Government Scam Watch saying scammers are using a genuine hacked ATO number. They advised to block or delete if you get anything from it. I've gone ahead and blocked it on my phone now.

I just had a ring from a number showing +61 1300 650 286, but I didn’t pick up cos I thought if it’s from Australia, it shouldn’t have the +61 at the front. Glad I found this site to double-check. Turns out it’s a genuine number, but scammers have taken it over. The number belongs to the ATO, but honestly, they won’t call like that. If the ATO needs to reach you, they usually send letters or official stuff. I’ll be getting in touch with them tomorrow to report what’s going on. Better to be cautious!
