I chose to send the ring back because we received correspondence from BG claiming that these individuals were meant to check our meter, but they never showed up when they said they would. While the number seems innocuous, they failed to respond on two attempts, and during one call, they actually hung up on me. It was also clear that they didn’t receive the text message we sent regarding this matter. Quite the hassle, isn’t it?

"Do give British Gas a bell at 0845 850 0854." We received this text on Thursday, 30th October 2008 at 12:40, but we aren't customers of British Gas. Naturally, we didn't bother calling that number, as it was clearly a scam.

Just received a message from this very same number, urging us to get in touch with British Gas. Seems a bit dodgy, if you ask me. Normally, if the genuine British Gas needed to have a word with you, they’d simply give you a call directly. I’d highly recommend that if you need to reach British Gas, stick to the phone number listed on their official website or on one of your bills instead. Better to be safe than sorry!

It’s really straightforward to verify your account by giving BG a ring at their official contact number, 0800 048 0202 - you should find this number on any bill you receive.

We've received this text message on three separate occasions and have chosen to disregard it each time. We did have a previous interaction with British Gas, but nothing further has come through. Since we haven’t changed our address, we prefer not to disclose any names. The whole thing seems a bit sketchy to us, and if it's genuinely from them, they could very well reach us by phone or drop us an email instead. Just doesn’t sit right!

I've experienced something quite similar recently. I just relocated and received my final bill in the mail. When I rang the number on it, the representatives insisted that I settle my account immediately. They seemed to know the precise figures, which suggests it might be genuine. Nevertheless, I refrained from providing any banking details, just to be on the safe side. I informed them I would make the payment at a later time.
