Yesterday, I completed an RBS transaction of £100. This morning, I received a call from them, presumably to verify that the transfer was legitimate (however, I missed the call, and could only listen to the voicemail). They insisted I return the call to confirm my personal information, describing it as ‘extremely urgent’. Now, here we are, approaching 4pm, and I’ve had no follow-up. So, perhaps it wasn’t quite as urgent as they claimed, haha! In this instance, I know it wasn’t a fraudulent transaction, hence I’m not inclined to ring back a possibly overpriced RBS helpline just for reassurance. I’ve got a strict policy of never sharing my banking details over the phone, no matter who’s on the other end. It’s crucial for everyone to bear in mind that even if this number appears to belong to an authentic RBS call centre, it doesn’t exclude the possibility of scammers masking their identity (they could very well display this number while actually calling from a different location - it’s entirely feasible these days). If you need to reach them, I’d recommend popping into your bank branch if that’s feasible, so they can confirm everything is fine on your behalf. Given the sheer volume of scam calls I’ve been bombarded with recently (the one with the Indian chap from ‘Microsoft’ insisting I needed to access a specific website to rectify my supposedly infected computer was a right laugh - that one’s still making the rounds, steer clear of it!). In the end, I registered my home phone number with the Telephone Preference Service, and thankfully, the number of nuisance calls has decreased. Nonetheless, I remain sceptical of any unsolicited calls from numbers that aren’t familiar to me. My phone and email are now treated with the same caution!

We've blocked this number twice now because every time we answer, it goes dead right away, which suggested it could be a nuisance call. However, when we tried ringing them back, they claimed that someone had indeed dialled us manually.

This number appears to be legitimate. When you transfer funds to a different bank using the faster payments system, it’s likely that this scam group could reach out to confirm that the transaction is authentic.
