Avoid pressing any numbers, as doing so signals to these callers that your line is active. Once they know it's a live number, they’ll persistently hound you with calls. Prior to that, they can’t tell if your number is active, since their dialling system is automated. I recommend leaving your phone off the hook for about five minutes; they tend to hang up then.

I've been on the receiving end of these calls as well, occasionally getting ones that are hidden and other times the number 0845 popping up. While I do enjoy a good chat over the phone, it certainly isn't the case when it’s an automated voice droning on and wasting my precious minutes.
