I had to call the Cooperative telephone banking because I was struggling to make a money transfer via their online banking system. The cost per minute is ridiculously high, about 50p each minute. Plus, when I mentioned I’d cancelled an order from a suspicious seller online, they gave me a different number to ring. Unfortunately, that number is just as pricey: 0845 6031333.

My teenage son, only 16, tried to open a new account with the Co-op bank using his mobile. He ended up getting charged £11.52 just for making the call. When he eventually finishes Uni and starts earning, they’ll want him to funnel his wages straight into their accounts, making the executives richer, but they can’t even offer free calls for youngsters like him setting up an account. They really shouldn't be promoting contact through an 08 number, especially when it’s aimed at people who’ll be their customers down the line.

On 2nd December 2014, I noticed a cost on my bill from this number, but I’m certain I never made that call.

So, I got hit with a £15 fee from the co-operative bank because my direct debit didn’t go through. Turns out, my mobile provider had added an extra £6 to my bill for a 17-minute call to 08448448844, which blew my carefully planned budget. The funny thing is, that number is actually linked to the bank itself! Seriously, what a sneaky setup. I’m definitely not happy being caught in this ridiculous loop.
