I recently found myself in a bit of a pickle with Cooperative’s telephone banking. I had to give them a bell since I was struggling to organise a money transfer through their online platform. The cost of the call was just ludicrous-nearly 50p a minute! They provided me with another number to report that I’d cancelled an order from a rather suspicious seller. However, wouldn’t you know it, that number is just as steep: 0845 6031333. What a bother!

My son, who’s just turned sixteen, made the mistake of using his mobile to create a new account with the Co-op bank and ended up with an £11.52 bill for the honour. It seems they anticipate him depositing his future earnings into their bank account once he graduates from university, further enriching their coffers as his salary increases. Yet, when he’s a young account holder, they can't even extend the courtesy of complimentary calls. It’s rather disconcerting that they promote contacting them via an 08 number, especially considering they’re courting the customers of tomorrow.

I received a rather unwelcome surprise from the Co-operative Bank, who decided to hit my account with a £15 fee for failing to pay my direct debit to my mobile provider. To make matters worse, my mobile bill had already swelled by an extra £6 due to a lengthy 17-minute call to the number 08448448844, which coincidentally turned out to be the bank's own line. Quite a clever trick, don't you think? This situation feels like an endless loop of frustration, and I must say, I’m not at all chuffed with it.
