I got a text from 68899 about a suspicious Argos purchase of £2421 which looked pretty legit, so I decided to call the number. The bloke on the other end sounded really convincing and knew loads about my Barclaycard. Halfway through, I asked how I could confirm he was genuine. He told me to google 68899, and since it’s a Barclays shortcode, I thought he was legit and kept going. He then texted me to say my card had been cancelled. Before the call ended, he said he’d send me £100 compensation through BACS, which didn’t sit right with me. My phone’s security kicked in and blocked further calls, but he phoned me again - turns out it was a premium rate number. The guy said his name was Mark Noble and told me to ignore any more Barclaycard messages. I had to cancel my Barclaycard and all my bank accounts today thanks to this crook. Absolutely terrible experience. -Jules

This morning at about 08:44 I got a text saying Barclays wanted to check on a fraud case, asking if I tried to spend £2421 at Argos on 1st Oct 2016. They told me to reply Y if yes or call 08432899441 if no. The number that sent it was 68989. I was certain it was a scam and definitely not from Barclays.

Got a text like that myself and it felt a bit dodgy. Ended up searching the number on Google which brought me here. Isn’t Barclays call centre an 0800 number if they need to reach you? Just seems off to me.

Got a call at 8.43am on 1st October 2016, someone claiming to be from Barclay’s fraud team asking if I’d made a big purchase at Argos that day. No one spoke after that, just a recorded message on loop, no chance to reply or get a name. I soon worked out it was a scam and that the number was premium rate, costing me a bit. Luckily, I’m familiar with scams like this, and it’s good to have found a site where I can report these dodgy calls.

Received a message claiming to be from Barclays fraud team, saying I'd just splashed out £2,000 at Argos. Quickly realised it was a scam linked to a premium rate number! Honestly, these numbers ought to be blocked, not allowed to keep scamming people like this.
