This morning, precisely at 08:44, I received a rather peculiar text claiming to be from Barclays, saying they were performing a fraud check. The message inquired if I had tried to make a transaction of £2421 at ARGOS UK on 01/10/16. They instructed me to reply 'Y' if I had made the transaction, or to ring 08432899441 if I hadn’t. The number displaying was 68989, which immediately set off alarm bells for me. I recognised it as a suspicious communication and was certain it wasn't genuinely from Barclays.

The caller claimed to be from Barclay's fraud department, inquiring if I'd made a purchase of a certain amount at Argos earlier that day. There was no follow-up number, and the call was from a premium rate line, which left me quite uneasy. It dawned on me that this was likely a scam, especially since they didn’t provide a proper name or any credible identification-just a tiresome pre-recorded message that kept looping. Thankfully, I'm somewhat savvy about these sorts of things, and I'm relieved to have stumbled upon a site where I can file a report.

Received a text purportedly from the fraud department at Barclays, claiming I'd made a £2,000 purchase at Argos. Turns out it was a premium-rate number and an absolute scam! It’s infuriating that these kinds of numbers are permitted to operate when they should be shut down immediately.
