On our most recent phone bill, there was a charge of £21 for calls to this number. We definitely didn’t make any calls to it. Apparently, there were three calls logged sometime between 1:50am and 2:50am, right in the middle of the night.

On Saturday 24th March, my Worldpay card reader dialled out three times. The first call was at 1:23am and lasted 4 minutes 19 seconds, costing me 88p. Then it rang again around 1:30am, this time for nearly 55 minutes, which ended up being a ridiculous £10.98 charge. Finally, there was another brief call at 2:26am that set me back 56p. Absolutely shocking! I'm definately not leaving that device plugged in and I’m seriously thinking about disputing these fees with Worldpay - or maybe just cutting them off completely. This is just not on at all.

I can't put all the fault on World pay, but surely they gotta be aware the installation firm is making them look bad by setting up these devices to push updates like this. You should really contact whoever supplied your units, since they’re the ones who should be sorting out this sneaky fee.

Got hit with another charge over £35 thanks to a Worldpay terminal. Feels dodgy to me - is this even allowed? Anyone up for chatting with the watchdog about this? I've just spotted this number, and it turns out one of the calls came through at 3 AM! It's a work phone, so there shouldn't be anyone around at that hour. Quite peculiar, to say the least!

Just got off a call with BT about some weirdly high ‘usage charges’ on my call essentials plan. This is for my alarm line, which normally just costs the usual line rental plus a tiny bit - back in Dec 16 it was 60p, now the March bill is £6.97. I was told my alarm firm might have changed, but after checking the number and reading some earlier comments here, it turns out to be my card reader causing it. I use an Ingenico machine and have a deal with First Data. In Jan/Feb, over just a few days, there were 31 calls from this number, mostly between 5 and 6 in the morning. I totally get the angry feelings shared here - as a solo business owner, I feel like I’m being picked on by these vultures. Off track a bit, but beware of the terrible BT Phonebook scam. They’re now charging small businesses for a Paid Line Entry in what used to be a free Directory. £16.99 a month means another £250 a year added to your costs if you don’t actively opt out and stand your ground.

I noticed 5 calls made from my card machine adding up to £19.51 in just one day, so I called my provider to check it out. Turns out, it’s a software update that happens somewhere between every 4 months and 2 years. To dodge these and other small, regular fees, I was advised to hook up the machine to my router using an ethernet cable instead of the phone line. It was pretty quick to set up, with a bit of help from the provider, and now the machine uses the internet instead - so no more surprise bills!

I called my provider after noticing 5 separate charges totalling £19.51 all on the same day from my card machine. Turns out it was a software update that apparently happens once every 18 months to 2 years. They told me I could dodge these small weekly or monthly fees by hooking the machine up to my router with an ethernet cable rather than using the phone line. With a bit of help from them, it only took me a few minutes to switch it over. Now the machine uses the internet connection, so hopefully I won’t be getting any more random charges!

I’ve had the same device and supplier for more than 2 years and never seen a charge like this before. I switched my phone provider recently and ended up with a bigger bill than I thought, so I asked them what’s going on. Now I’m just waiting to hear back from Lloyds Cardnet.

Hi, we've noticed some unusual charges from Worldpay for calls made in the middle of the night at about 2.40am and 4.16am, costing us £8.40 and £1.26 respectively. I don’t use a Worldpay machine, I get mine from a different provider. On the 29th of April, my BT phone line showed 31 calls adding up to £29, all linked to Worldpay and the number 08448221974. Tried to get help but nobody seems interested. Why am I supposed to follow PCI DSS rules when clearly this kind of thing is happening to me?

Really thankful to see others have shared their experiences here, I was starting to lose my head! My shop got hit with loads of calls, bout 14 of them just about 6 in the morning, hours before we even open up. I got a payment terminal from Worldpay, and turns out it’s the same deal as what folks above described. I've been billed £17, which is pretty annoying. After reading through these comments, I’m planning to contact Worldpay, though I doubt they’ll do much. It’s wasted ages of my time, which honestly, they should make up for. I got in touch with Worldpay's customer support regarding this and they advised me to forward copies of my phone bills to Customer Care at Eurocentral, 14 Wood Hall Road, Motherwell, ML1 4YT. The most recent bill, dated 2nd April, showed a charge of £7.58 for a call lasting 1 hour, 9 minutes, and 40 seconds. However, it seems there have been numerous shorter, less expensive calls over time which could add up to a significant amount. At least, that's what I consider quite a lot.

I’ve noticed this particular number appears on my phone bill, showing that it was called at 12:26 AM on the 15th of March 2016 for a whopping 71 minutes, which racked up a charge of a rather hefty £12.
