10 yearsI got a weird alert on my Chromebook and decided to ring the number it showed. The guy on the phone said his name was Martin and even claimed to be from Microsoft, flashing some sort of ID. He told me all my gadgets connected to my router at home were in danger. He then took control of my laptop, pointing out that my firewall had supposedly expired - which I didn’t even know was a thing! He went on about other issues with my device and even showed me a “caught hacker” trying to steal passwords and bank info. After all that, he pitched a fix-it deal: £200 for three years, £300 for five, or £500 for a lifetime warranty. I thanked him and said goodbye, but we ended up chatting for over an hour. I’m honestly worried he might’ve accessed my stuff since I trusted the alert and let him in.
