I listed my bike for sale at £1350, accepting only cash or bank transfers. Suddenly, I got an email claiming I’d received £1850 via PayPal out of the blue. The message also said I had to pay £50 for shipping and send £400 through MoneyGram. I replied telling them I’m not selling it via PayPal, that I don’t know who they are, and asked why they sent money without any prior chat. Minutes later, I got another email threatening my PayPal account would be suspended and said if I didn’t send the money, I’d be arrested and go to prison. My PayPal balance is zero. I have no idea where this “buyer” is even located, they only gave me 3 hours to act before arrest. Is this a scam? What should I do? Please help.

Hey everyone, just wanted to share my experience. I put my car up for sale on Ebay and got a reply super fast, which made me a bit wary straight away. The supposed buyer wanted to pay using PayPal but never asked to see the car. They said a courier would come pick it up to save me the hassle. I priced the car at £4000, but then I got a dodgy email claiming PayPal had sent me £4930. It said I had to send £50 via Western Union and £780 from my own account to "verify" the payment. Of course, no money showed up in my PayPal. So, I rang 08007765571 and a guy answered saying "Hello, this is PayPal." The line was really quiet, like they'd taken the call at a house. When he asked for my PayPal number and bank info to verify me, alarm bells instantly went off. I forwarded all the emails to [email protected], and they told me to delete the fake mails and change my passwords on both email and PayPal right away. Total scam alert!

I've had this bloke ring me about buying my car off eBay. I told him to just make the purchase through eBay and PayPal, but then he starts going on about taking legal steps. Absolute muppet. Seriously, don't hand over any cash to him.

I never received a call from this number but got an email supposedly wanting to purchase my car on eBay, asking for my PayPal info. The email came from [email protected]. Something about it felt off, so cheers for the posts here - they’ve backed up what I was thinking.

Hey, I never dialled that number but got a message on eBay just like the ones mentioned here, from someone called Anthonyallency. Seems like they’re still up to the same scam. Fingers crossed they’re nabbed quickly.

I got hit with the same scam today - identical name, email, phone number, and the exact message about the bike I’m selling, word for word. I rang the PayPal number he gave me and got an Indian bloke on the line. I asked where he was from and he said England, which I found odd. I pushed for a bit more detail and he said Manchester. Then I asked if I could talk to someone else, and he asked for my email before supposedly putting me through. Next thing, he just hung up. What really set me off was the PayPal email landed straight in my spam folder (which the guy obviously was counting on 😂). Honestly, the email looked so legit it made me wonder how many others fall for this.

Heads up! Just got contacted about something I’m selling on eBay. The message said:

"Hello, I’m interested in your item. Is it still available? Also, what price are you asking? Please reply to my email anthonyallency AT aol.com (replace AT with @). I don’t check eBay often but can respond quicker via email. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon!"

I’ve already flagged this to eBay. Stay careful!

Just had someone get in touch about a car I’m selling, same email and details, really trying to get £400 in advance and organising some shipping over to Dundee. Got suspicious and googled the email, nothing good came up. Cheers to everyone for sharing these warnings! Seems like a total scam to me!

Did anything come of this? I’m dealing with basically the same thing right now, some bloke wanting to buy my car and it’s weirdly the exact same story word for word.

Was trying to sell my car on eBay and this bloke claimed he’d sent the payment through PayPal, even said it covered postage. But then I ended up having to hand over £500 to some company. He gave me a number to call, said it was PayPal, but some random foreign voice picked up so I just hung up. Tried ringing PayPal myself but they were shut. Emailed the guy back and now he’s threatening to report me, insisting the money’s already in PayPal.
