I listed my bicycle for sale at £1350, offering payment through direct cash or bank transfer. However, out of the blue, I received an email from PayPal stating that I had been paid £1850. The message also mentioned a shipping fee of £50 and requested that I send £400 via MoneyGram. I promptly responded, clarifying that I wasn’t willing to conduct the transaction through PayPal and that I didn’t recognise the buyer. I asked why the payment was sent without any prior discussion. A short while later, I got another email threatening that my PayPal account would be suspended and that if I didn’t transfer the funds, I could face arrest and imprisonment. My PayPal balance, however, stands at £0.00! I have no idea where this so-called customer is based, whether locally or abroad, and they even gave me a mere three hours to comply before threatening legal action. What should I do? This feels like a scam; I could really use some advice!

Just like many others, I've had a chap attempt to purchase my vehicle from eBay. When I suggested he go through eBay's PayPal to complete the transaction, he started throwing around threats of legal proceedings. What a piece of work! I’d advise steering clear of him and definitely don’t hand over any cash!

I received a peculiar message concerning my car listed on eBay, but I've no record of this particular phone number. The person asked for my PayPal details, which raised a few red flags for me. The email they used was [email protected]. It's definitely felt a bit off, so I really appreciate the information shared here that aligns with my instincts about this situation. Cheers to those who’ve posted!

Hello there! I didn’t end up dialling that number, all thanks to this fantastic web chat feature. However, I did receive a message on eBay that was eerily similar to the ones mentioned earlier, from someone named Anthonyallency. It’s obvious that this person-or whoever is behind that name-hasn't given up on their dodgy little scam. Fingers crossed they’re brought to justice sooner rather than later!

I can completely relate to what you’ve experienced today. I received an identical name, email, phone number, and the very same message regarding the bicycle I’m trying to sell-word for word! When I rang the PayPal number, I ended up speaking to the same chap with an Indian accent. Curious about his location, I asked, and he claimed to be in England. I then probed a bit further about his actual whereabouts, and he said Manchester! Quite amusing, really. When I asked to speak to a different representative, he insisted I provide my email address, after which he hung up on me. It struck me as odd that the PayPal email landed straight in my spam folder-something he clearly anticipated! It was a bit unsettling how genuine that email looked, to be honest.

CAUTION! I've encountered another dodgy one! While trying to sell an item on eBay, I received this rather odd message: "Hello, I'm quite keen on this item. Could you let me know if it's still available and what price you're looking for? I'd appreciate it if you could respond to my email anthonyallency AT aol.com-just swap out the AT for an '@'. I don't always check eBay, but I'm quick to reply via email. Thank you, looking forward to your response. Cheers!" I've already flagged this to eBay. Stay vigilant!

I’ve received a message from the same individual regarding a vehicle I’m looking to sell-using the same email and everything. They’re demanding £400 in advance to sort out shipping to Dundee. Thought I’d do a quick search on the email and I’m so grateful to everyone for sharing their experiences! Clearly, this has the hallmarks of a scam!

I'm curious about how things unfolded following that. At present, I'm facing an eerily similar scenario with a bloke who's keen on purchasing my vehicle.

I’m trying to sell my car over on eBay and things have taken a rather dodgy turn. The buyer claimed they had deposited funds into my PayPal account, including shipping costs, but then they insisted that I needed to send £500 to some company. They even provided me with a number to call, saying it was PayPal’s customer service. However, when I called, a foreign chap picked up, and I thought better of it and hung up. I tried to reach PayPal directly but they were closed for the day. I’ve now dropped the buyer an email, but it seems they’re threatening to report me, claiming they’ve already transferred the money into PayPal. Honestly, it’s all a bit suspicious, isn’t it?
