Saw a text in my genuine Santander message inbox about some credit card request! Bit suspicious so I rang Santander themselves. Turns out, no such application was made and they told me they usually only alert you through email if there's an issue. So defo a scam message.

Banks often use loads of different numbers to reach customers, and scammers have been known to copy these numbers to trick people. The person who answers your call might not be able to tell if the number you called from is real, but they’ll confirm if the bank has actually tried to contact you. Keep in mind, even if the call was a rip-off, that doesn't mean the number itself is fake, so don’t be too quick to block it.
