08006404999 Summary (Read all comments)

Phone number โ˜Ž๏ธ 08006404999 ๐Ÿ‘† is reported as a frequently used DWP contact number primarily for Universal Credit, Jobcentre, and benefit-related calls. Many genuine claimants confirm receiving legitimate appointment reminders or updates without requests for sensitive information over the phone. However, considerable caution is advised as scammers frequently spoof this number, posing as DWP representatives and attempting to extract personal or banking details. Authentic DWP callers typically verify identity through security questions and encourage verifying calls via official methods, such as the UC online journal or known DWP helplines. The DWP generally does not call without prior written notification and rarely operates weekend calls, so unexpected or out-of-hours contact can indicate fraud attempts. Users are encouraged to report suspicious calls, avoid sharing information over the phone, and confirm call legitimacy directly with official DWP channels.

Got a call at 8:50 pm so I really doubt it was UC, especially since I’m not claiming any benefits. Didn’t pick up and there wasn’t any voicemail left either.

Someone rang me up tryin to sell summat. I sent £24 to account 09-01-29 46491936 but two hours later, I was shocked to see a refund of £37 pop up! I tried sending £24 again four times as a faster payment and every single time, bang on two hours later, I’d get £37 back. After that, I just stopped in case it was some kinda trap or I got into bother.

I’ve been trying to contact the compliance team, specifically Tanya Ali at DWP. But the number I’m calling has been disconnected. I’m really concerned now about my benefits.

Got calls from this number a few times. They left a voicemail asking me to call back on a 0204 number. But when I tried calling that one, it just went straight to dead air.

I’m with the DWP and can confirm that 0800 640 4999 is the usual number used for universal credit calls. If you’re unsure, it’s best to ring the universal credit helpline at 0800 328 5644. Legit UC callers will always ask you four security questions - two from their side and two for you to answer.

It was defo the DWP, spoke with a really nice lady checking that everything’s still the same with my son who I care for. She didn’t ask for any private info, just a quick catch-up cos covid’s pushed back the usual appointments. Hope this clears things up x

My phone showed the caller as dwp uc but I’m actually on the old ESA support scheme and don’t need to go to job centre meetings unless they send something in the post. I didn’t pick up and they didn’t leave a voicemail, even though they usually do.

Definitely Universal Credit. Called today to check if the rent for a tenant is paid straight to the landlord and when the payments come through.

It was really the DWP calling me, right when I was getting ready for a meeting and already behind schedule.

Someone said they were from D.W.P. A woman said she was trying to speak to my son but i told her to speak to me instead as he dont do phone calls. When i told her i dont just chat to strangers on the phone she said shed send a letter instead. But her details about me were all wrong so im not sure what to think. Could be a scam, who really knows?

Got two calls from this number today and I just ignored it, thought it was one of those annoying surveys or telemarketers from Sky or Virgin. Turns out it was the DWP. My bad.

This number truly belongs to the DWP. The lady I chatted with was someone I have talked to previously. She could be working in a DWP call center but was aware of my job centre and job advisor. She also mentioned she tried ringing earlier on the same number even though she knew the call was set up for later (maybe she was testing me!). The call was just a regular fortnightly check-in and setting up a new appointment.

There’s no way it was the job centre, DWP, or my bank since it’s Sunday today. They called me three times and I just ended the calls straight away. I’d just block this number and carry on.

I haven’t made a claim in over 6 years so getting a call out of the blue about old claims is a bit weird, isn’t it? They said they’ll be posting me a letter or something.

It was someone from the DWP calling about my son’s details.

Missed a call from this number at 9.13am. I had a weekly UC phone appointment at 9.30am about job searching. I put a note in my journal saying me and two of my kids have covid, so please try again later. Only got that one missed call though. Usually they phone from an unknown number, not this one. Comments here are all over the place so I’m a bit confused. It’s now gone 10am and still no call back. I’ve left another message in my journal asking if that was actually them.

Got a call pretending to be from the DWP, saying it was Hendon Job Centre. Total scam, they wanted me to respond to a 0204 number. Sadly, older relatives fell for it and gave out bank info and personal stuff. Checked with the actual job centre, they said no one from DWP had called. Watch out for these dodgy calls!!!

The ongoing coronavirus crisis seems to have opened the floodgates for numerous individuals keen on harvesting personal data through dubious phone calls. It's particularly notable with all this chatter about ‘remote working’ arrangements. Many of the numbers appear to be genuine, supposedly linked to the Department for Work and Pensions, yet they rarely adhere to proper protocols by asking for sensitive information. Often, the callers' accents hint at origins from South Africa, the US, the Philippines, or even parts of India and the Far East. While there's nothing inherently wrong with outsourcing call centres to other countries, it undoubtedly paves the way for a surge in scams. My advice? Better to ignore these calls altogether; they're just irritating interruptions that line the pockets of those behind them.

Watch out!! The caller said it was from Telford job centre but then asked me to verify my bank info as some sort of security check. Nah, if it was real they wouldn’t ask for that, so I just ended the call and told my local job centre about it. They said usually it’d be something in your file or from your actual office nearby.

I received a call claiming to be from the job centre in Telford, but it feels more like a ruse to extract my bank details. They wanted to set up an appointment, yet I don't even reside in that vicinity! Steer clear of this - don't let Mr Fox pull the wool over your eyes!

Some bloke called himself Mr Fox saying he's from universal credit but wouldn’t give me any real details. Couldn’t confirm nothing and he didn’t even know anything about me. Felt like he was fishing for my info. For sure a scam. The number showed as Telford job centre but I’m nowhere near there so definitely not genuine.

So this number rung my mobile, then the same one rang my landline later. Bit odd coz I live in Doncaster but this is a Telford number. When I picked up the house phone, it was dead silent. If it was the job centre, they normally book appointments before ringing, so don't think this was legit. Also strange how they had my home number since I've only got my mobile on file. Proper weird!

Got a scam letter and missed two calls from 08006404999. When I went to the DWP office after the letter arrived, the people at the jobcentre tried ringing the number too but couldn’t get through. Anyone know why that might be?

It’s the DWP calling to check that nothing’s changed with your details. If you don’t pick up, you might see a note in your journal saying they’ll try again later. Before discussing anything, they’ll want to ask some security questions to confirm who you are.

They claimed they were from the DWP and said I’d need to attend in person every couple of weeks. I have both a disability and mental health issues, so it’s been really upsetting. I even got a letter, but when I phoned them, they said there was no record of a call. I’m in a support group and was told there were changes happening. They didn’t even ask any questions about data protection. Honestly, I’m more stressed than I can handle right now.

They just needed to confirm it was me and said they'd ring me back soon with the details of how much and when I’d get it. I phoned the number back, and it was the DWP alright. So yeah, let's wait and see what happens.

Total scam, DWP dont really phone you direct, they usually just leave notes on your Journal or your online "to do list". So most of the nice things people say about calls are not true. If you think DWP actually rang you, best thing is to check with them through your Journal or their official number. Give them the number you got called from, they’ll tell you straight away if its legit.

I rang about ESA and PIP, thinking it was the DWP, but turns out it isn’t an official government line. Really caught me off guard since I assumed it was something urgent. They told me no genuine DWP number ends with 4999, and if they left a voicemail, it’d always say to ring them back - not that they’d get in touch later. I thought I fixed that ages ago when I applied, but maybe it got exposed somehow or they dug it up from somewhere else. Even if it’s a real number, it might be cloned, you never know.
