I got a letter sent to me and a text message from the number 0800 500 288. It's legit, apparently someone is trying to switch my phone service over. Definitely not a scam or anything.

Got a text from this number just like others mentioned here. I decided to ring them up and got asked some security questions. The person on the line was quite rude and acted like I was being a nuisance. I told them about their poor attitude but nothing changed and they just ended the call. Afterwards, I called 150 to check if 0800500288 was a legit BT number. The folks at 150 confirmed it was. I then sorted out the problem with 150, who were much nicer on the phone.

I got a text on my phone claiming it was from BT saying someone else was trying to take my number. The thing is, I’m not even a BT customer. I phoned BT on a different number and they told me no such request had been put in. I’m guessing it’s either a mix-up or some kind of scam.

This really is a legit BT number. I was pretty wary at first after getting the “someone else wants your phone number” message. I rang BT on a number I’d found on their website from before, and it turns out someone (maybe by mistake) put my mobile number on their account. The message was from BT but wasn’t about my account, just theirs. Glad I checked because they’ve now promised to remove my number from that other account. It took some time to sort it all out, but in the end, it got done.

It’s definitely a real BT number. I got a message saying someone else was trying to take over my phone line or somethin. The weird thing is, the text came from the exact same number BT gave me when the engineer set up my fibre. Luckily, the request got cancelled and the person I talked to didn’t ask for any personal details, just stuff you could easily find on Facebook. Probably just someone put in the wrong postcode trying to set up their internet.

I got a couple of texts saying someone wanted to switch the phone line at my place and to ring 0800500288. I ended up calling BT on 03301234150 and they told me it was a genuine message. Apparently, it’s quite likely someone has moved in and entered my address by mistake (someone did just move into the flat next door recently, so that fits). If you get a text like this, I’d definitely advise getting in touch with BT or you might lose your phone service. Took them about 10 minutes to sort it when I rang.

There’s this dodgy number pretending to be from the broadband provider - honestly, to all those well-paid telecoms folks with fancy job titles, how about instead of posting on social media to look good, you actually do something and stop these scams? Regular people, struggling as it is, can’t be dealing with this nonsense at a time like this.

I'm shifting back to my mum's since she's living alone now, and I'm sorting out moving my broadband over to her because she only has a phone line. I was with her when we got that "text" call, roughly ten minutes after I'd just spoken to BT, so I'm pretty sure it was legit. She got another message about an hour later as well. But honestly, knowing how smart these scammers have gotten, I’d always suggest ringing BT yourself to be safe.

Got a text at first, ended up deleting it. Then, a dodgy automated call came through, and after that, an email claiming to be from BT saying someone was trying to switch my phone line and mentioning fees because I’m still in contract. This really is an authentic BT number. They use it if someone’s attempting to transfer your phone line. I got letters from BT telling me to call this number when someone accidentally tried to claim my line. The official BT phone and their online chat confirmed it. They didn’t ask for any dodgy info like card details or anything shady. What’s shocking is that BT actually lets your line get taken over and your broadband get disconnected. You have to respond to these messages or it’ll happen. If you’re away on holiday and miss them, you’re in trouble.

Got a call from 0800 500288 where someone claimed they were trying to transfer my phone line to another provider. I told them I wanted to keep my existing service. They said they’d sort it out and that I’d get a confirmation letter soon. A letter did come through, printed in purple ink - not the usual BT blue - and it said someone was trying to take over my line, would cancel the contract, and send me a final bill. It asked me to ring that number straight away. The bloke on the phone had a British accent and mentioned I was paying too much for broadband and phone, offering a cheaper plan (which I’m sure was a ploy to grab bank details). I was suspicious since I’m already locked into a new BT contract. I refused and rang BT myself. Turns out it was a scam.

Definitely a con. First off, they reached out by text on my mobile, not on my landline like they claimed, saying someone else wanted it. Also, BT would’ve mentioned my name and last 4 digits of my account to confirm it was really them. Loads of times on my landline, I get calls saying they’re from BT wanting to test my broadband speed. I just tell them to give me my name and last 4 digits of my account, then they hang up straight away.

Got a message from 64 364 (looks like a real BT Text number) saying my number was about to be switched over. I rang BT on 0800 800 150 to double check. If you get this kind of text, I’d say phone BT straight away! Turns out someone tried to use my address to set up a broadband account. BT also posts info about any “change” they get asked to make, if you ignore the call.

I got an email from NOWTV saying my phone line was being transferred to another user. Thought it was a scam, so I just ignored it. Then a few days later I received a letter from BT saying someone was moving into my place, asking me to ring 0800 500 288 if that wasn’t right, plus another letter addressed to the new 'tenant' with some account info. I called BT on their official customer service number 0800 800 150, and they confirmed there is an account with that name. So for now, it looks legit, but quite worrying that 0800 500 288 is flagged as a scam number.

got loads of messages from bt warning me someone might be trying to redirect my phone line and told me to ring this number. phoned bt but they weren’t much help, said they have to accept redirection requests because of the law, and that’s why they send those texts so you can stop it if it’s happening. if someone does manage to redirect your line, they could divert calls to pricey numbers abroad or premium rate ones and that ends up costing you money you shouldn’t have to cover.
