I got a PayPal request for payment that seemed off: Name: Maritza Cantu Date: 3rd December 2022 - Cancelled - Request received Amount: £698.00 GBP Sender: Maritza Cantu Email: [email protected] Transaction ID: U-5GW57411AS268113H The message said: Warning: FRAUDULENT ACTIVITY DETECTED IN YOUR ACCOUNT, £749.99 GBP DEBITED FOR Waterstones Gift Vouchers. IF THIS WASN'T YOU PLEASE CONTACT US RIGHT AWAY ON +44-800-368-1827 Requested amount: £698.00 GBP Total due: £698.00 GBP Please watch out because this looks like a sneaky scam meant to trick people. I reported it to PayPal but it seems they’re using various names and probably different emails too. If anyone gets caught by this type of scam, I'd recommend getting in touch with PayPal straight away to get the payment reversed. They should have measures in place like banks to protect users from fraud and scammers, and if this keeps happening through their platform, they really ought to take responsibility for it.

Got a call claiming to be from PayPal asking me to call a number about a payment. The number wasn’t actually PayPal’s though. The payment alert did appear on my PayPal when I checked, but it’s easy to cancel it straight from the website or by phoning PayPal themselves. Never call the number they give you in these calls, they just try to get your bank info by asking loads of questions. Beware, it’s a scam.

Just got an email supposedly from PayPal saying there's a cash withdrawal from my account - £749.99 for Waterstones vouchers, from someone called Joseph Sanders. They said it was fraud and told me to call +44-800-368-1827 immediately if I didn’t authorise it. Thought it looked dodgy, so I cancelled it online straight away and sent a report to [email protected]. Pretty sure it was a scam but better safe than sorry!

I've been hit by that same "PayPal" con everyone's talking about - something about a £749.99 Watersons gift card spend. A while back I got a very similar email, not from the same number though, and it mentioned a different PayPal transaction, but the amount and the scam were identical to what others described. What's odd is, I barely use my UK credit card and these dodgy emails showed up right after I made two genuine purchases: one with EasyJet and another through Ticketmaster. This summer, I also got stung by fraud on another credit card that's not UK-based. After booking loads of stays on Booking.com, which is Dutch-based, someone used my card for Uber rides in India, but the charges came through Uber Netherlands. Makes me think maybe some of these companies have leaked data or there's a crooked insider somewhere.

I got 4 emails at once, all at the exact same moment. I didn’t call the number or click any links, just logged into my PayPal. Turns out there were 4 payment requests from someone called Wyndie Moomaw, each for £749.99. I quickly cancelled every request then searched the number here to see if it was fishy.

I got a call that felt like a scam, but it showed up linked to my PayPal somehow. They wanted my mum’s maiden name, which I gave, but then tried to get my debit card details - didn’t share those though. The bloke’s name was ‘Michael’ or so he said, but didn’t really sound like one. Told me to ring back. The suspicious activity’s still popping up on my PayPal. Proper odd situation.

Someone mentioned before that these people are using a PayPal account that's been hacked to send payment requests to loads of random emails. They don't bother checking if those emails actually belong to real accounts. Best thing to do is either cancel the request if you can, or just ignore it altogether.
