I keep getting calls from this number about a person I’ve never even heard about. I’ve told them loads of times that they’ve got the wrong number, but they just keep ringing anyway. I ended up ringing BT customer support and they said the number calling me is legit. The lady tried to check why I’m being contacted but there was no clue. She couldn’t guarantee the calls would stop, so I had no choice but to block the number!

I got a call at work from someone saying they were with the BT complaints department, but we’re not even customers of BT. They asked for a person who doesn’t handle any telecom or billing stuff here. When I asked for more info, the caller admitted they meant to reach out to a completely different firm, although one we used to work with. Sounds like either a dodgy sales call or some kind of scam to me - either way, I’d say it’s sketchy and not safe at all.

She’d been told by her son, who works for EE in Merthyr Tydfil, that his new boss said she wasn’t allowed to join and that the boss was trying to block anyone new from signing up. So it turns out it was BT calling!!! but seriously, dont leave them a message! They couldnt organise a mess if their life depended on it. I booked a Fibre Optic install and it was a total shambles - totally unprofessional and no idea when they’d actually show up. No proper communication at all about timing. If that really was BT calling, it was a pretty poor effort. When my answering machine picked up, the caller just dropped the call without leaving any message. I don’t have any appointment set up with them at all. Plus, they weren’t even ringing from the official number that BT normally uses. I’m definitely going to put in a complaint with BT about this. At this rate, I’m thinking BT and I might be going our separate ways.

I found out that 17070 is actually the number for BT/Openreach’s line test. If you ring it and then press 1 for the "ring back" option, then hang up, your phone will ring shortly after. The number that pops up on your caller ID is this one, 17070.

If you get a ring from 0800 328 9393, it's legit and actually BT. Weirdly, this one number covers all sorts of customers, from retail to business and big corporate ones too. Plus, every department seems to use this exact number. Sometimes you'll get a strange call from an overseas centre asking for security details out of the blue, other times it might be a tech trying to fix your line even if it's chucking it down outside. Honestly, BT is a nightmare to sort out - they’re proper hopeless. I’d say steer clear if you can.

Received a call from a lady with an Indian accent claiming to be from BT billing complaints. She wanted to speak to Mr Maduka, but when I told her he wasn’t around, she said she’d call back later. I asked which number she’d use to ring again, and she told me it would be this one. I pointed out it was actually my own phone number, but she insisted it was one of three linked to Mr Maduka. I explained that this line is registered to me alone. After that, she said she couldn’t discuss the reason for her call since I wasn’t Mr Maduka and then abruptly ended the call.

So yeah, that’s an authentic Openreach number. But knowing how things go these days, I wouldn’t be surprised if scammers try to spoof it. This number rang me and it was actually from BT/Openreach - they wanted me to confirm a broadband voucher they’d sent by email a couple of days earlier. The person on the line spoke with a Liverpudlian accent and their English was pretty clear. That said, caller ID can be faked really easily these days, so I bet most calls from this number are just spam. I’d definitely be cautious if you get a call from them.

This number was involved in scamming by taking over a BT email account and then using that to hack a credit card. The thief added the card to their phone and got security codes sent there to confirm. They managed to swipe almost £2,500.

Someone spoofing BT called me and seemed to know quite a bit. They claimed the company was dissolved at Companies House and asked if I was a new business at the address (they rang my mobile). They mentioned the address and the services we supposedly had with BT. I told them the company wasn’t dissolved and said I had to speak with my accountant first. They then tried to give me a number to ring back which I just ignored. I checked Companies House to confirm our status was fine, then called BT directly to verify. It turned out it wasn’t an official BT call at all.
