I got a call from this number asking me to verify my account info, but it felt dodgy. So, I rang the Amex helpline straight from my card, and the person there told me it’s a scam number that’s been flagged before. Definitely don’t call back!

Like others have mentioned, this call said it was from American Express and it actually was. Still, I reckon they shouldn’t be telling folks to ring any number other than the official one. I called the number on the back of my card and got through to the right people easily (the security team handles this). That’s what I’d recommend doing whenever you get a message like this. But if you were told to ring that number, at least you know it’s not a scam.

This is a legit American Express number for their Identity Protection Team. I recieved a letter telling me to ring this number. After reading some of the comments here, I got a bit wary so I phoned the main Amex customer service line first and asked them to put me through to the Identity Protection team to confirm the reference number on the letter I got.

It was Amex calling. I was a bit suspicious at first but then confirmed it was legit. Totally agree with the comment here. If you're ever unsure, just ring their customer service and they'll connect you to the right team. This number is for the fraud division.

If you ring your bank to verify whether a call is genuine (like in the post below), the people in the call centre usually can tell if the bank has tried to get in touch with you and can either pass you to the right team or sort it out. Bear in mind, the call centre might not know every number the bank uses. Even if they say it’s a scam, that doesn’t always mean the number itself is dodgy. Spoofing real company numbers is a big headache for both businesses and customers.

Never just brush off unexpected calls from your bank. Always ring your bank back using the number on your card to be sure. Banks use loads of different phone numbers, and scammers have copied nearly all of them, so you can't know for sure if the call is legit or if it’s some trick to get your details or cash. There’s even scammers who put up fake danger warnings about real bank numbers on sites like this, trying to get people to block them or report to '7726', which causes your phone network to flag those numbers as scams for everyone. Stay sharp and double check!

SCAM ALERT!!! Got a voicemail claiming to be from Amex so to be careful, I rang the number printed on my Amex card and was told its a scam, the real Amex never contacted me. Dont trust the comments here saying its legit, i think they’re fibbing and might even be the scammers!

Amex!!! Always ring Amex direct using the number on the back of your card to double check. Scammers have faked all sorts of bank numbers, so you can’t really tell if it’s your bank or some scammer just trying to steal your money.

Not sure why I'd get a call from Amex fraud prevention when I'm not even a customer. I wouldnt trust this number at all. If you get a call saying its fraud prevention from American Express and you actually bank with them, just hang up and look up their official number to call them back yourself.

Got a call from someone saying they were Amex, claimed there was a security issue because someone tried to connect my Amex card to my Apple ID. I’d also got emails saying the same thing. They asked me for some personal info which I refused to share. Checked with Amex through the live chat on their app and they told me it definitely wasn’t them - it was a total SCAM!!!

Like a few people mentioned, this really is the genuine Amex UK fraud team number. I recently got a new Amex card and had already called them to fix some problems when trying to add it to Google and Apple Pay. I think they just wanted to check it was really me adding the card to my gadgets. What struck me as strange though was that the email telling me to call this number only showed up in my work email inbox.
