I got a call from someone named Tom, said there was an issue with our meter. Claimed he was ringing from Opus. I kept telling him I didn’t trust the call since he asked questions they should already know if he really worked there. I gave him a bit of info, but nothing that seemed risky. Asked him for his contact number and he said it was 0800 3246809. After we finished, I tried ringing that number back... but the call didn’t go through.

Someone called me, said his name was James Patel and claimed there was a technical issue with their system. He wanted to confirm our MPAN number and gave me part of the supplier's code. When I asked him to tell me the MPAN he had and my address, he actually knew my address right, which made me a bit suspicious. So I took down his phone number and looked up the MPAN he gave me... it turned out to be completely different. When I phoned him back, it just said I’d dialled the wrong number. Pretty sure it was a dodgy scam attempt!

Some guy called me claiming to be James from Opus. I asked him to prove he was really from Opus and he gave me a supply reference number. I figured it was fine so I kept chatting and gave him some numbers. Then my boss told me to stop sharing info because if he was legit, he’d already have that info. I asked the caller for his full name and number so I could ring him back. Turns out it was a scam - I rang Opus myself and they said they hadn’t been in touch. Luckily, they promised not to make any changes to our account. Definitely look up any number you’re unsure about!

I just got a call from this number and the bloke claimed his name was James, but he had a really strong Indian accent. He was asking for our Gazprom account and meter numbers, and even wanted to know when our contract ends - which he said was wrong. Then he mentioned something about us paying by direct debit and wanted to check the details, which made me a bit wary. I asked him for his full name and phone number to report it to our utility brokers. He said they don’t work with brokers, which made me even more suspicious since our brokers always handle our dealings with Gazprom. My advice: don’t give out any info without checking who you’re speaking to, and definitely look up their number first on Google!

Dodgy brokers were calling up trying to fish for info. Total scam alert.

This number called my workplace claiming they needed to confirm details about my electricity account. They said they were ringing on behalf of my energy provider and seemed to know some info already, but then started asking lots of specific questions about how much I pay, which didn’t feel right at all. I refused to give any details. After contacting my actual supplier, it turned out they had nothing to do with this call. Seems like some sneaky company fishing for info to try and pitch me something, even though they denied it when I confronted them. I've now arranged a password with my energy company to make sure future calls are legit!
