Got another call earlier that seemed fishy, just ignored it because they’d already called asking for info before.

I picked up my home phone and got an automated voice telling me my direct debit had bounced and that if I didn’t pay soon, my services would be cut off. They gave me a number to ring, but I didn’t have anything to jot it down with, though I remember it started with 033. I tried calling back on the 0800 number they rang me from, but it just went to another recorded message. The voice sounded just like the official BT one I’m familiar with - odd since I haven’t been with BT for ages, actually had a fallout with them about 16 years back!

Got a call from some muppets claiming to be from BT/EE saying my direct debit was stopped and they’d charge me a fee for it. Thing is, I don’t even use direct debit to pay. So I phoned BT myself and they confirmed straight away it was a scam. Absolute nonsense!

WARNING - got a call from what said it was BT, but it was one of those automated scams. The voice actually read out my phone number to make it seem legit, then told me to press a number from a list. From what I know, it’s a trick to get you to call a pricey premium number. If I could, I blocked it straight away. Weirdly, my phone even showed the caller as "BT" which made it feel quite real. I guess it’s no surprise though, since BT switching to digital was supposed to make it super easy for scammers to fake their number and name, just like cloning. So be careful!

After that, I usually look up the number on Google and most times they turn out to be scammers. So, I block them for good. This call was no different.

This bloke started off claiming he was calling from BT, saying he was checking on my switch from BT to Sky (which I actually am doing). In my experience, this number is actually BT, although I've heard some folks mention scammers spoof it too. What really annoys me is that BT never bothers to send me an email or a paper bill when it’s time to pay. Instead, they just ring from 08001691608 using an automated system. The problem is if my answerphone picks up, there’s no message left, so I have no clue my bill’s overdue. Because of this, I ended up with a temporary block on my calls once. Honestly, BT, it’s daft. Just email me the bill like everyone else - it’s not like it costs anything!

Sounds like either some dodgy billing scam or BT have got their wires crossed. I don’t owe BT a penny, yet I keep getting calls from a robotic voice claiming to be this number. I’ve never handed over my bank info to anyone who rings me out of the blue. I do settle loads of payments over the phone, but it’s always me ringing a legit number from my bill or logging onto a proper verified site first.

People keep saying this is a billing scam but that’s definitely not the case. Honestly, I think a lot of folks just don’t wanna admit they owe BT money. From what I can tell, this number is legit, but the scammers somehow spoof calls to make it appear like BT is calling when it’s not. If you try 1471, it looks like the call’s from BT, but that’s just not true. They call it spoofing, and honestly, it’s crazy how they’ve been able to keep doing it for years. Got a call from a well spoken woman claiming to be from BT saying my direct debit of £43.35 had bounced. She sounded convincing, told me to press a number (can't recall which) or to log into my BT account. I got suspicious since I'd just ended my contract and paid the final bill. I did check my BT account but found no sign of any missed payment. The message was so polished it easily could’ve been BT, but common sense told me they don’t handle billing like that, so it was a scam. Hope no one else gets caught out by this.
