This is just a complete con! They try to sneak into your PC and steal your private info, then push some rubbish software that’s meant to clear out malware that isn’t even there. They’ll show you how to use the task manager to close the warning, then demand payment, taking you to a dodgy site where you enter your card info. Once they have that, they sell any details you gave to loads of other shady companies, so you end up getting scammers pestering you all the time. Only ring them if you want to waste your time and get annoyed!

Was looking up something on Microsoft’s site on a brand new laptop, straight from the box, when this weird message popped up. I quickly shut the window but it definitely gave me a bit of a fright for a moment! I’ve started a virus scan just to be on the safe side, though judging by what I've read here, it’s probably nothing to worry about. I’ll post back if anything odd comes up. Just the other day, I got hit with this scary pop-up that claimed to be from Microsoft. The whole screen lit up in flashing red and some woman with an American accent was telling me to call a certain number straight away. I’m in my sixties and not great with computers, so it really caught me off guard. Luckily, my son knows his way around these things and told me straight away it was a con. After a bit of fiddling, I managed to shut it down and, as far as I can tell, nothing bad came of it.

This was 100% a scam. They tried really hard to trick anyone not too tech-savvy into letting them take control of the computer screen. If you get a pop-up like that, just ignore it. Shut your computer down properly and give it a good few hours off before turning it on again. After that, make sure to do a full scan on your system.

I got a scary pop-up from what looked like Google Chrome saying my PC had a Trojan virus. It even had a voice warning me. I couldn’t close the tab no matter what, so I just powered off the computer and unplugged it. Then I phoned the number they showed (0800-086-9996). A calm man who sounded like he was from the Indian subcontinent answered, very polite, offering to fix the problem by accessing my PC remotely. I said no thanks. He warned the virus might get worse if I didn’t act fast. I told him thanks but ended the call. Later, I used a mate’s tablet to look up the number and was glad I didn’t fall for it. Bit of a pain since now I have to keep my computer off for a whole day, as someone else suggested on here.

This number pops up on dodgy ads that stop you from closing your browser window. To fix it, just press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to open Task Manager, then find your browser, right-click and select "End Task". No need to run any scans afterwards, though it wouldn’t hurt to get an ad-blocker to keep those annoying pop-ups away.

Be careful, this is one of those tech support scams. If you ring them up, they'll want to get remote access to your PC and then claim it’s full of viruses. After that, they’ll ask you for money to fix the so-called “malware.” Best thing to do is just shut down your browser and don’t go back to that site that popped up the warning. You’ll be alright if you keep clear of it.

Looks pretty real at first glance but it’s defo not from Microsoft. Just hit ctrl alt delete and give your PC a quick restart to be safe.

This sort of thing happens all the time and it's really frustrating. If you hit (ctrl)+(alt)+(del) and open Task Manager, you can shut down Chrome to stop it. Try to remember what websites you had open and figure out which one might have triggered the popup - if you had loads open, just think it through, sites with tons of visitors like Facebook or Google usually aren’t the culprits. If you're still feeling uneasy, run a scan with Windows Defender or try out the free antivirus at home.sophos.com - they’re offering a year’s worth of advanced protection if you join their beta. For a bit of amusement, look up "tech support scammer" on YouTube and enjoy the show!

When you're unsure, just pop the phone number or keyword into Google and see what comes up. That's what I usually do in situations like this.

So when this message comes up on your screen, just press control, alt and delete at the same time, then go ahead and turn your computer off. I’ve done a virus scan twice after it showed up and nothing bad was found. The best thing is to avoid clicking anything as soon as you see it.

I got the same warning message as others here, but luckily my PC just let me shut the window down right away. Still seems like a total scam to me though, and now I’m kinda worried if my computer might’ve been compromised or not.

Just grabbed my task manager and closed the browser straight away. My Norton antivirus kept popping up alerts about blocked threats, so I’m not really stressed about it.

I got a call from 08000869996 and it was definitely a scam. If you want to protect yourself, try using Sandboxie - it runs your apps in a separate environment so they can't mess with your other files or programs for good. It really helps keep things safe on your computer.

This was definitely a scam. I got a pop-up urging me to ring "Microsoft Support" using this number. I ended up on the call for nearly 45 minutes because the person sounded quite knowledgeable. They even took over my computer to “fix” it, saying the operating system needed reinstalling for £180, and my Norton antivirus wasn’t compatible, so they offered to install Microsoft’s version for £300. It all seemed very convincing, but I still felt uneasy and decided to hang up. Later, I contacted the genuine Microsoft, who confirmed it was a scam and told me not to connect to the internet for at least a day. Since then, I’ve changed all my passwords and temporarily frozen online banking. Fingers crossed no real damage was done apart from the hassle and stress. I’ve also informed the police just in case something else pops up.

If you get a call from that number, dont bother answering or calling back its definitely a scam. You can easily close any suspicious popups by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and opening Task Manager. Then just shut down the program that’s causing trouble. Stay safe!

Was browsing a football site when suddenly an error popped up telling me to call a certain number. On 20th December '16, my laptop popped up with a warning saying it was at risk and I should call that number. I've seen something like this before, so instead of panicking, I just switched it off overnight. When I turned it back on the next day, the message was nowhere to be found.
