Woke up to loads of missed calls from an 0800 number claiming to be the Amex fraud dept. Thought it was dodgy, so I called the number on the back of my Amex instead. Turned out it really was them! They said someone tried to use my card late at night. They’ve blocked the card now and said a new one will be sent to me straight away. Glad I checked before calling back that sketchy number!

Got a call from the Amex fraud department about some purchases they said got declined. I decided to test them by purposely giving a wrong answer to one of their security questions, and they caught it right away. So, I’m pretty sure it’s a legit number. They sorted everything out really quickly, which was a relief.

Got a call around 8pm on Feb 26, 2007. The person said they were with American Express and somehow knew my name. I asked them to just send me an email instead. The accent was quite thick, sounded like it could've been from India, Bangladesh or Pakistan. Then they just hung up and I blocked the number straight away.

I actually got a call from Amex for real, checked by ringing the number on the back of my card afterwards. This caller only wanted to verify my address - said it was standard procedure for genuine calls. If they start asking for card details or anything more, it’s probably from some hacked or fake number.

For sure, that’s the AMEX Fraud team. I rang the number on the back of my card and once I got past security checks, I asked about the phone number, and they said it’s the direct line to their Fraud Squad. The number on the card is just a general contact. It’s all legit, no worries. If you’re unsure, just hang up and call the card’s listed number yourself.

Definitely a scam. They’re super sneaky and act like they know way too much about you. Just a heads up, if a bank rings you, don’t trust it straight away - hang up and ring the number you find on the official website or on your bank card instead.

I got a call from someone claiming to be Amex fraud team. I told the woman on the line that I’m always suspicious of random calls like that, so she told me to ring the number on the back of my card instead. I also had a missed call from my landline but since no one left a message, I just ignored it. When I phoned the number on my card’s reverse, they confirmed it was indeed Amex’s fraud department. Turns out they were looking into a charge on my Amazon account for signing up to IMDb, which I never agreed to. So yep, it really was Amex fraud checking up on things.

My partner got a ring from this number earlier. They only asked a couple of questions before saying they were going to block the card and send out a replacement. They said someone tried to use it yesterday at a place called Braintree, which wasn’t recognised. About 10 minutes after the call, she got in touch with Amex herself and the rep confirmed the call was legit. Luckily, my other card on the account seems fine. So now we’re just waiting for the new card to turn up and not using Amex till then.

Got a call and then a message from this number tonight. The text had my first and last name wrong, which seemed odd. I rang the Amex number on my card to double-check, and they asked me for the 15 digits on the front, my dad's birthdate, and the three digits on the back. I told the guy from India that I wasn’t willing to give all that info. It made me nervous because I reckon they might have redirected my call from Amex to their number. I looked online and nothing weird showed up on my account, no unusual transactions or anything, but I’m pretty sure this was a sneaky scam.

Totally a scam, no doubt! Ignore any other reviews you see. They rang me up earlier asking for my personal details. Their only excuse for the number being genuine was that if you look it up online, it says it’s legit - 100% those positive comments are written by the scammers themselves.

Saw a missed call from this number and decided to look it up. It said something about Amex account protection, but it was on a strange part of the American Express site. I rang back, but then they asked me for my dad’s date of birth, which felt off since I don't think I ever gave that info to Amex. They told me if I doubted it, I should ring the number on the back of my card. So I did, and sure enough, there was a charge they wanted to verify with me. Honestly, whenever this happens, I’d say just call the number on the card straight away to be safe.

Dont just think this is Amex Security calling. Scammers can copy the number so it looks legit on your caller ID, like the real one from the official site. I got a call from this number and rang the Fraud Dept who told me there was nothing wrong with my account and they weren’t the ones who called me. So it was a scam try using a real Amex phone number. Please, dont think its definitely Amex - ring them back using a different number found on their official website (look for the little padlock to be sure it’s secure) and make sure the line is clear or use a different phone when you call.

My other half got a call from this number but he didn’t want to get involved cause it seemed a bit sketchy. They rang two times and he didn’t say anything when he picked up the first call. Got a call claiming to be from Amex about some fraudulent activity. When I asked how he could prove he was really from Amex, he just dodged the question and told me to ring Amex on a number I trusted. Then he just ended the call.

If you get a phone call or message that looks like it’s from your bank or credit card company, be cautious but don’t reply straight away. Scammers are clever and can mimic the exact numbers banks use, tricking even the most careful people. Just listen to what they’re after, hang up, and then ring the number on the back of your card yourself. It’s the safest move, really.

Usually get a message from amex first before the security call.

Got a call from this number so I phoned Amex using the number on the back of my card. They told me it wasnt them and they never called me. Definitely a scam.

this is amex fraud team. I double checked by calling the number on the back of my card instead of this one. there’s actually a legit issue with my card!

Just got an email from Amex saying: "you or someone authorised recently approved the charges below as valid. if you think these were confirmed by mistake, contact us right away on 0800 917 8047" - so maybe 0800 077 8057 is dodgy?? not sure - stay safe!

I tried ringing 0800 077 8057 but no answer and didn't bother calling back. At the same time, got an official looking email from Amex fraud team, so I’m thinking it might be a legit number??

Indeed, it appears to be the American Express fraud team. We dialled the lost and stolen hotline listed on their website, which is 01273 696 933. Shortly after being passed to their security division, the representatives confirmed that this number actually belongs to them. Curiously, the very first chap we spoke to seemed completely unaware of it!
