I suspect this is linked to some sort of autodialler, where the first lucky soul who answers connects, while everyone else just gets the boot. 0800 0936 735 - Looks like these scammers have switched up their tactics. I got a message claiming to be from Barclays saying there was a suspicious payment of £2000.00 02UK. It asked me to reply Y if it was me, or call 0800 0936 735 if not. Thing is, I don’t even have an account with Barclays or O2. I work in banking and have seen loads of these scams lately. Beware! This is most certainly NOT British Gas, despite their assertions. I've had eight calls now from this number, claiming to be British Gas trying to arrange a smart meter installation. I’ve made it abundantly clear that I have no interest in having a smart meter installed, yet they persistently keep ringing back. I reached out to British Gas to voice my concerns, only to be informed that this number is definitely not theirs. It seems it’s likely one of the independent contractors dealing with smart meter fittings. My advice? WATCH OUT! This is NOT British Gas like they say. They've rung me about eight times even after I told them I didn't want a "smart meter," which I find really annoying. I checked with British Gas and they confirmed this number isn't theirs or anyone acting for them. Also, just so you know, your supplier should offer a smart meter by 2020, but you don't have to take it unless your current one stops working properly.

A very courteous bloke rang this morning from that number, said he was phoning from BG and wanted to talk to (insert lady's name). When I told him he had the wrong number, he was really sorry and ended the call straight away. Honestly, it didn’t seem like anything sketchy or annoying to me.

NOT FROM BRITISH GAS - I rang British Gas afterwards to verify (I set up a callback with them for tomorrow) and they confirmed it’s not them. Apparently loads of firms are doing this nowadays, fitting smart meters in an attempt to steal British Gas customers. They might install a meter, but they’re not connected to British Gas at all - if you’re unsure, give British Gas a bell yourself to be safe.

Talk about customer service gone awry! They seem to think it’s acceptable to bombard us with relentless and pushy sales calls. Honestly, who has the time to chat with them? The bloke I spoke to couldn't even tell if I had a smart meter installed. He said he was from BG or something like that. Head over to britishgas[###], click on ‘Contact Us’, then on the left side choose ‘Did we call you?’ I popped the number in there and, like others said, it says ‘Sorry, we can’t find that phone number.’ So yeah, pretty clear this wasn't them!

This is actually a subcontractor working on behalf of British Gas. They're doing a rollout of new smart meters for them. Since British Gas engineers have their own jobs to do, they hired these guys to handle this extra task. The calls are legit, although they can be a bit insistent. I've decided to block the numbers as I’m not interested in having a smart meter, and I prefer to stay in credit with British Gas rather than the other way around.

I spoke directly with a manager there who confirmed they’re not involved at all. These scammers install smart meters and then charge either the suppliers or sometimes even the customers themselves. Seriously, be very cautious before handing over any personal info or agreeing to anything from these companies.

Later, I phoned British Gas on 0800 9755555 - the number is legit and appears on their official site - and a lady there confirmed my booking. Funny thing is, when I rang 0800 9755555 right after the initial call, the appointment didn’t appear on their records, so I’m thinking this call was from one of their subcontractors. I only checked after waiting a week though.
