This number called me with an automated message saying it was NatWest Credit Card Fraud Prevention. I didn't answer and instead dialed the contact on the back of my card. I got through to a real person who told me they had been trying to reach me about suspicious activity on my account. After checking, I confirmed the transaction was legit. So it seems this number is probably a real NatWest line. Still, like the rep said, if you’re unsure, best to just hang up and call the number on your card directly.

If you get a call or a text saying it’s from your bank, you have to be really careful. That doesn’t mean you should just ignore it though, because sometimes there could actually be something important going on that needs sorting fast. Fraudsters have got clever and can fake any bank’s number, so you can’t just trust the caller ID. The best thing to do is hang up properly, make sure they’ve disconnected, and then ring the number on the back of your card yourself to check what’s happening. Easy as that.
