Not long after, two texts came through showing my recent transactions, asking me to reply Y or N depending if I knew them. After I replied, another text popped up saying the card was unblocked again. It all seemed pretty simple and legit to me.

Yeah, this calls really are from NatWest’s fraud team. When you don’t answer and it goes to voicemail, you get an automated message. Shortly after, NatWest sends you a text. I’ve noticed it usually happens after you’ve spent a big amount from your account. They’re just checking if the transaction was yours to decide if they should unblock your card - won’t ask for any personal info or anything like that.

I can vouch for the legitimacy of this number. I dialled the contact listed on the reverse side of my card, and they provided verification. Subsequently, they connected me with the fraud department, who raised an eyebrow over a couple of transactions I had made to a company called Zavy, which I’d never interacted with before. Thankfully, these payments were indeed authentic, each amounting to merely £10, so they were greenlit. So rest assured, this number is indeed a valid one for NatWest.

It’s infuriating - it feels like I get bombarded with these sorts of calls nearly every week. Why on earth can’t something be done to put a stop to this? We really ought to have better safeguards in place.
