So I bought McAfee for my computer off digitaltec and got the code, but it wouldn’t actually let me download the software. I jumped onto their live chat for help and soon after, somebody rang me up. This bloke kept going on about some issues with my firewall and then started pushing me to buy a firewall package for like 99 or 139 quid. It just felt a bit dodgy, so I ended the call pretty quickly.

I really hope the person who shared this scam made sure their mum’s computer was properly scanned for any viruses or malware. It’s important to get that sorted. Also, they should’ve reported the scam to Action Fraud so the police can keep track of these things. Details are on their website.

She called, and ended up speaking with a guy called ‘David’ for about half an hour, who was trying to talk her through the problem. Still, the computer’s no better now. Funny thing happened earlier today, I got a pop-up that looked exactly like the McAfee site. Right after, some bloke called me about the error. Didn’t even suspect it was dodgy at first. Really sneaky scam this one, they show you a Norton looking webpage that looks legit and give you a number like above, claiming to offer firewall plus free antivirus if you pick 3 or 5 year plans. They claimed to be from Norton, said they ran a test on my computer and found some sort of botnet infection that my newly bought Norton couldn’t get rid of. Then, strangely enough, they offered to sell me a removal tool along with three more years of Norton antivirus for £159. When I mentioned I couldn’t pay that much, they knocked £20 off the price. After I said I’d think about it and get back later, the ‘engineer’ started insulting me, saying I was daft for not buying straight away and maybe a bit too thick to understand.
