Beware, this number’s linked to a scam. I was reading a dog news page on Facebook when suddenly my laptop froze. A message popped up telling me not to turn off the computer and to call a ‘Microsoft’ helpline. The alert just kept looping so I decided to force shut down my laptop and then looked up the number. Turns out, if you keep your device on, these scammers can actually download your data. Pretty sneaky stuff! - caller: 08000418050

My computer just locked up on me after I clicked on some facebook story about saved puppies, which turned out not to be puppies at all. Then I got a popup telling me to call a number. Took me a minute but I figured it was a scam. I opened Task Manager and ended the Microsoft Edge process, that kicked the message off and my computer started working again.

Beware, this site claims to be Microsoft but it's actually a con. Avoid ringing the number at all costs. Best thing to do is switch off your PC straight away and once you turn it on again, do a full virus scan.

My mum just got the same call. I told them to stop ringing her. The caller sounded like they were abroad and the connection was awful.

Got the exact text pop up like Jane mentioned, but managed to get rid of it in the end. Didn't bother calling the number since it felt a bit dodgy. Thanks everyone for confirming it’s a scam. - caller: 08000419050

Just got a call from this number, said my screen was locked or something, got me all worried at first. But I didn’t fall for it. Turned my laptop off straight away, seemed a bit dodgy to me. Everything’s fine now. I was scrolling through Facebook, but I honestly have no clue what I might have clicked on since I usually block all the ads.

I just went through something almost identical to what Jane mentioned earlier after clicking a link on Facebook. They started asking me stuff that didn’t sit right. So I asked, "How can I be sure you’re actually from Microsoft?" Their response? Just "Because I am." That didn’t really reassure me, so I ended the call. Later, I rang PC World, and they sorted out my screen in no time. I’m pretty sure it was a scam attempt.

Just dealt with this myself. I called the number, though I wasn’t keen, and told them it sounded suspicious... then all of a sudden they said they couldn’t hear me at all! Did a quick search online and found this. Decided to close my laptop and take a break for a bit. Caller: Me.

After clicking on a Facebook ad, a warning popped up on my laptop claiming to be from Microsoft Support, telling me not to turn off the computer. My mouse stopped working, so I was stuck. I rang the number from my home phone to check it out. During the call, I felt uneasy about the whole thing and finally decided to just switch off the computer. Thankfully nothing bad happened, so I ended the call. Immediately after, I got nine calls from different mobiles, and they left three voicemails. One of the messages said they were annoyed I ended the call and threatened to block my number. Definitely not Microsoft calling me!
