"For safety purposes, could you give me a bell on 08000281290 to confirm that you've received the CIMA credit card I sent over recently?"

For my own safety, could you please give me a bell at 08000281290 to confirm that the WWF credit card I sent recently has been received? Cheers!

This number checks out; it's printed right on the front of our brand new MBNA card. The other card issuers mentioned are all linked to MBNA in some way.

Blimey, that’s a fair bit of information to hand out to strangers, isn’t it?

Received a text from MoneyAlert regarding an Emap credit card account! They mentioned I’ll be receiving my PIN along with the card and credit limit in the coming ten days. There was no request for confirmation or anything, but I can’t help but feel curious, haha! I already have an MBNA card on its way, and it seems like they’ve recognised our limits and all that, but still a bit baffled by this whole thing!

Contrary to popular belief, these messages aren’t dodgy at all; they’re legitimate communications from MBNA. It's likely that someone entered the wrong number by accident, leading to this mix-up when you don’t actually hold an MBNA card. What really grinds my gears is how difficult it is to opt-out; the only option seems to be a phone call. We raised concerns about the legality of receiving unsolicited texts, but they claimed that since we provided our number, they had every right to send them. Absolute shambles, I tell you!

Received a call from this number earlier today. I’ve decided it’s best not to return the call - better to play it safe, I reckon.

"I'm a bit concerned about this message urging me to call 08000281290 to confirm the arrival of a new WWF credit card. Could this be a sign that our personal details have been compromised, resulting in someone fraudulently using our identity for a credit card? Or might it potentially be a premium-rate phone number scam that would wind up costing me a fortune? Either way, it's quite alarming!"

I've received countless text messages from this number. The latest one claimed that I've been granted £18,000 to spend on an MBNA card. The thing is, we've never owned an MBNA card at any point. This just screams scam to me!

I’ve just received a text asking me to call a number to confirm receipt and such. However, I can’t find any reference to this number on the MBNA website, so I definitely won’t be giving them a ring!

The most recent text message I received said, "To ensure your safety, kindly give me a call at 0800 886262 to confirm that you’ve received the WWF credit card I sent your way." Not too long ago, I received another message stating, "Your credit card is now active! Don’t forget to make use of it before 11/01/2009, and WWF will receive up to £40, plus an additional 40p for every £100 spent using the card." A few weeks back, there was also one asking us to confirm receipt of a card, but we ended up deleting that message!

To ensure everything is in order, could you kindly give me a call on 0800 028 1290 to confirm that the MBNA Platinum credit card I dispatched to you has arrived safely? It's a little concerning when I send one of those out...

Honestly, I can confirm that it was indeed a text message from MBNA. I received the same one and made sure to verify it with them earlier today.

Received a text message urging me to ring this particular number to confirm the arrival of a new credit card. Strangely, they were privy to the kind of card I supposedly had and even mentioned the last four digits. The catch? I haven’t received any new card! The message came through at 04:05:25 PM on the 18th of February 2008, and there was no caller ID. Quite suspicious if you ask me!

I've received two text messages insisting that I need to confirm the receipt of a Miles & More credit card. The thing is, I’ve never even applied for one! It has me rather worried that we could be dealing with an identity scam if we make a call, yet we could also fall prey to a phone scam if we don’t. Quite a predicament, isn't it?

Text message: "Could you please give me a call at 08000281290? I need to confirm that you've safely received the MBNA credit card I sent over, which ends in 2266. This is just a precautionary measure. Thanks!"

MBNA has made it clear that the message in question is entirely above board. It’s dispatched whenever a customer hasn’t confirmed receipt of their card within a few weeks of it being sent out. They’ve pointed out that the phone number included in the message should match the one on the card, which makes it pretty improbable that it's a scam. If you ever find yourself unsure, it’s always safer to ring the number printed on your card rather than the one mentioned in the message. Better safe than sorry, right?

We exchanged several messages with MBNA to confirm the details of their credit cards. We contacted MBNA's fraud department at 0800 854 745, and they were able to clarify that our number has been wrongly registered on the accounts for existing customers.

This phone number is masquerading as a representative from MBNA credit card services. A right bunch of charlatans, if you ask me. It’s quite disheartening that Ofcom seems to turn a blind eye to these nefarious characters.
