So I noticed a missed call from this number and when I checked, there was a voicemail supposedly from Natwest Fraud saying they needed to get in touch. It struck me as odd because Natwest normally gives you a heads-up before calling, and I couldn't find the number anywhere legit on the internet. I rang the number printed on my Natwest card and spoke to their Fraud team, who told me flat out they hadn't tried to reach me at all - was definitely a scam.

Got a call from someone claiming to be Natwest’s genuine card fraud dept. If you don't pick up, they leave a voicemail mentioning your name and asking you to ring back. When you do, you get some automated questions about your recent card use. If you spot any transaction you don’t recognise, you press a button and get put through to a real person who'll discuss the charges with you and either explain them or arrange to cancel your card and send out a replacement.

I can confirm this number is genuine. It’s Nat West ringing to double-check your transactions in case there’s been any fraud. They called me twice - first on my mobile, which I missed, then on my landline. I had to verify 5 payments, which all seemed fine, but who knows, they could’ve been dodgy. They asked for my date of birth and then made me enter the day and month before confirming if I agreed with the amounts spent or not.

I got a voicemail that said it was from NatWest, but how can you be certain it’s actually them without hanging up and ringing your bank yourself to verify the number? It felt quite dodgy being asked by a recorded message - one that I had no way of confirming - to give out not only my birth year but the exact day and month too. That’s exactly the kind of info a scammer would be after, and it seems unnecessary just to prove my identity. Why don’t they just send a text or message telling me to check something safely through my online banking instead? That’d feel much more secure.
