I got a call out of the blue trying to set up a covid jab for me. Bit odd since I wasn’t expecting any calls about that!

Received a call purporting to be from Cardiff and Vale University Health Board regarding the COVID booster. Sounds all too familiar, doesn't it?

It seems this isn’t unwanted correspondence; it looks to originate from the genuine Twitter handle of Cardiff and Vale.

I attempted to ring, but it seems the phone is switched off.

What a load of nonsense! Numerous other remarks suggest that this phone number might be linked to NHS Wales, yet curiously, they’re also offering some delightful deals at your nearby paintball arena. I’d recommend hitting the delete button and blocking this number immediately, as it’s likely just a vacant mind on the other end, attempting to con unsuspecting individuals. Stay savvy, folks!

Upon responding with a 1 or 2, you might be directed to follow a link. Notably, these messages tend to present themselves in both Welsh and English and never include a mobile number. When you attempt to call the number, it seems to go directly to voicemail, suggesting that the phone is switched off-likely a spoofed number, to be honest.

I recently had a chat with NHS Wales, and they assured me that my appointment is indeed secured. It's all above board! I've suggested that they consider tweaking their text format to prevent any mix-ups down the line.

I’m a bit sceptical about it, to be honest, as my partner - being older - had his vaccinations before I did, yet he hasn’t received any notification about a booster shot. Interestingly, the message does mention my name. I attempted to respond to verify if it’s legit, but no one seems to have replied yet. Quite perplexing! 🤷‍♀️

I can confirm that it is indeed the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, despite its rather questionable appearance. The system they’ve implemented leaves much to be desired, and just a heads-up: if you attempt to reschedule your booster jab, you’ve got a mere 10 minutes to accept the new date and time. If you don’t respond in that timeframe, it’ll default back to your initial appointment! Quite the nuisance, isn’t it?

It all seems a bit dodgy, so I’ve shot over some screenshots to the vaccination centre’s email of the health board, just to verify whether it’s legitimate or not.

Several others have pointed out that the message came from a mobile number and was solely in English. Before I received my vaccinations, any correspondence was via letters sent directly to my home and included my full name. I can't help but think this could be a scam or some kind of fraud, but I'm puzzled as to what they might be trying to accomplish with this!

I took the plunge and visited the vaccination centre I had gone to before to inquire about the text I received regarding a COVID booster, just to determine if it was legitimate. The manager assured me that, indeed, it was AUTHENTIC! She explained that it's a new initiative from NHS Wales (I’m based in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan) aimed at promptly notifying folks about their booster jabs. Consequently, she confirmed that I had an appointment set for the 23rd of December but was more than happy to reschedule it to a date in January that suited me better. I mentioned that some people around here were wary, thinking it might be a scam since NHS Wales typically sends bilingual emails. She said she would relay my concerns to NHS Wales. My advice to anyone else getting booster shot messages in this manner is to pop down to your regular vaccination centre and have a chat with them to verify its authenticity. I hope this provides some clarity!

The previous texts regarding vaccinations came through clearly marked from "NHS Wales," and they’ve always been in both English and Welsh. If this isn’t just a scam, it would be wise for Cardiff and Vale UHB to establish a webpage listing recognised sender numbers and short codes to prevent any unnecessary misunderstandings. We’ve flagged the message with 7726 (for those on Vodafone, it’s 87726) to alert them about potential spam texts.

No other options were provided for changing the appointment. Now, I'm beginning to think this might be a scam. I've already had three Covid vaccinations and, given my immunocompromised status, I had hoped the government was just extending the offer for extra shots to those deemed at risk. It's left me feeling a bit anxious about what I might have inadvertently agreed to. There were no requests for bank information, and I didn’t click any dodgy links, yet I remain puzzled about the entire situation. When I tried calling the mobile number back, it turned out to be disconnected.
