I've tried calling back an unknown number four times now, including this one, just to find out - nicely, in this instance - that they weren't the ones who dialled me. Another time, I thought maybe they'd misdialled, but the person got angry instead. If anyone can explain how you could get a call like this but it’s not actually from the number shown, I’d really appreciate it. Normally, I don’t even pick up calls from numbers I don’t know. Cheers.

Check out the comments here! Whoever really owns this telephone should contact their network and OfCom to report that fraudsters are copying their number. The catch is, if you report this to 7726, your number might end up blacklisted by the phone companies. It’s also worth dropping a message to your MP to raise awareness about this issue. There has to be tech in place to block scammers from using fake or cloned numbers on our lines. If you get calls from unknown numbers, show them this thread and warn them to NEVER return calls from numbers they don’t recognise!
