I recently received a rather dubious message on WhatsApp from someone masquerading as my daughter. The text claimed she had misplaced her phone and filed a report for it being lost. To my surprise, her bank had frozen her account for a couple of days and she urgently needed me to settle two bills for her, promising to reimburse me in a couple of days’ time. As the conversation continued, this individual insisted that she had another phone and requested I save the number she was messaging from, stating she was unable to call me. I suggested she simply use her own phone, and then 'my daughter' claimed she was busy picking up some flowers and grabbing a bite to eat. Quite sceptical, I decided to call my mother-in-law, who confirmed that my daughter was actually at home working in her office upstairs! My mother-in-law went to check, and indeed, there she was safe and sound. Thankfully, I didn’t part with any money as the scammer lost interest. I urge everyone to report such incidents to WhatsApp to have the number blacklisted and ensure they enable two-step verification for their accounts through Google.
