Received a call regarding donations for a magazine intended for a children's hospice, and I must admit, it raised quite a few red flags for me. The call came from a mobile number, which I find a bit odd. Plus, the woman on the line had a distinctly Mancunian accent. Personally, I wouldn't encourage anyone to part with their cash over the phone for such requests-seems risky to me!

I received a call from someone purporting to represent Raising Smiles charity, attempting to peddle advertising space in one of their publications. The fact that it was just a standard mobile number raised my eyebrows, so I took the liberty of ringing up Raising Smiles directly on 0800 772 0824 to verify if the number was indeed legitimate. It turns out they have a partnership with a contact centre called Best Solutions. The chap I spoke to wasn't able to definitively vouch for the mobile number, but he reassured me it was likely above board. He mentioned there was no financial commitment required until we had finalised the artwork for the advert, which should put my mind at ease. I pointed out that a random mobile number could easily belong to anyone, which cast a shadow of doubt over its authenticity, and noted that an 0800 number would carry more weight in terms of credibility. His response was rather dismissive, suggesting that “most folks would just decline anyway.” I replied that yes, the number appeared rather arbitrary, which could trigger suspicion. He remained unconvinced, so I expressed my gratitude and politely ended the conversation. Am I being unreasonable here?

I had an identical experience as described earlier! Someone rang up, asking for us by our company name. I mentioned that we have more than enough promotion going on right now (which is likely where they snagged our number from in the first place). I suggested they could send me some information via post if they really wanted to. Then out of the blue, they said they'd ring back and promptly hung up. I can't help but think, given that it’s the same mobile number, it might be a dodgy call!
