Yet again, got a call from some dodgy lot claiming to be from a "government approved green energy programme" or something similar. At least it wasn’t the usual bloke with an Asian accent pushing a second hand coffin deal that I got earlier today. I gave him a right shock when I mentioned I had a one-off cremation booked for November 5th on a sort of trial basis. He didn’t quite know what to say after that!

AUTOMATED CALLS USING PC. They use a programme to ring loads of UK mobiles. Got a pre-recorded voice chat about some green deal from the government. Total rubbish, no way true. I blocked them through BT call protect and told trading standards. To their credit, they’re trying to crack down on these calls. Proper pain. TOTAL SCAM.

Pretty clear it was an automated voice saying they are contacting me about a government Green Deal. These calls are the ones where if you press any button they’ll start telling you loads of rubbish just to get a sales person to come out and push the HARD SELL. For the past month and a half, I’ve been getting calls from this number every couple of days. When I answer, there’s no one there or it’s some government window scheme trying to get me to press 9 to opt out but it does nothing. I spoke to Virgin Media about blocking the calls and the only advice they gave me was to use their anonymous call rejection feature. I told them these calls aren’t anonymous, so that option doesn’t work for me. Anyone got any tips on how to block these numbers on a Virgin Media line? Thanks!

Just to clear things up for those getting annoyed: a silent call usually means it's an automated system running loads of lines at once with a massive list of numbers to dial. When it rings you, if someone is free to take your call, they get connected straight away. If no-one’s available, it waits a bit, so you end up saying stuff like ‘Hello? Who’s there? Pick up!’ and then either links you through if someone finishes their previous call, or more often just hangs up and tries the next number. The whole setup’s made to keep ahead and hopes the operators can manage the pace.

(Continued) Most times they just cant, because they’re getting non-stop calls and have to stick to a strict time limit on each one (usually about 60 seconds) or they get in trouble. So, if you’re dealing with a real person, try to keep the chat going as long as you can and maybe cause them some hassle (hehe). But if it’s a silent call, report it to Ofcom as they handle that sort of thing. For recorded messages, contact the ICO. If someone’s trying to scam you out of money, maybe report it to the police or Action Fraud. Hope that clears things up a bit!
