I got a robocall saying it was HMRC, saying I was involved in some fraud and told me to press 1 to talk to them, which I guess would have charged me right away. Not sure what would have happened if I'd gone along with it. Real HMRC calls will always use your proper name - they never just accuse you of fraud from the get-go. That’d actually break data privacy rules. Usually, if there’s a serious issue, they’ll send a letter first or, in extreme cases, come round with the police and a warrant, even if that means turning up super early.
