In the space of just 20 minutes, I got two texts from 07860002003. The messages said something about OutFox the Market and arranging an appointment for a smart meter installation. They apparently switched to this number as they can get text replies for bookings. Before this, they were using 3301359954, which I slammed the block on after reporting it to Who Called Me back in April. Now I’ve blocked this latest number too since it’s getting a bit much, and hopefully this warning will be useful for others having the same bother.

Got a text saying "You're in luck, your 7pm slot for the smart meter is still free..." so I just deleted it. Never booked any appointment or anything like that. This came after two other messages from unknown numbers (I deleted them and can't remember the names they used, but they were different) saying that someone would be in touch about my smart meter fitting.

I'm based in the Midlands and just got this dodgy message. It said, "Hi, this is SMS from Shell Energy. You’ll get another text soon from 07860002003 about a smart meter installation date. We use this separate number to handle reply texts for appointments.” But Shell doesn’t exist anymore, Octopus Energy took over. Best to block it if you see it.

Dodgy lot, I got a message saying Shell will ring me about installing a smart meter. Thing is, Shell Energy is now Octopus Energy. I’ve had like 30 blocked calls from various numbers and Google flagged them as scams looking to steal money and info. Make sure you warn your mates so they don’t end up getting scammed out of their savings.

I also checked the number that called me, and it just feels like a scam to gain access to your house or your bank details. How did they even know I’m a Shell customer? Could be Shell Energy calling, but not 100% sure. Don't feel rushed into agreeing to a smart meter. Make sure you ask what happens if it breaks down and what’s the deal with the rechargeable battery that powers the display showing your usage - like how long it lasts. I’ve heard from folks where their smart meter stopped working and the provider wasn’t much help at all. One mate of mine has been billed on estimated readings for almost 2 years since they got a smart meter fitted.
