This is the third time I've been rung on different numbers, this one included! A lady asked for me by name, but when I asked who was calling, she just ended the call. I could hear a call centre buzzing in the background, so I'm pretty sure it's some spam or scam call!

Hey everyone, I used to be in sales and if you head over to the telephone preference service (TPS) site and sign up your number, these firms legally can't call you anymore. It's totally free but just a heads up, it takes about 28 days before it actually kicks in.

Scammers could not care less about TPS. That only really affects genuine businesses. These con artists just want to rob you or get into your PC. You should report every scam call to Action Fraud via their phishing report page. Just stick to the steps on their website, including telling the NFIB. After that, report it here too, and block the number. This is the only real way to protect people from these nasty frauds and stop them bugging the rest of us.

If folks just ignored cold calls, they would probably stop pretty quick. The problem is some do answer, so these companies keep at it. I personally don’t bother with them, and if a company keeps calling out of the blue or sending junk mail, I make sure never to deal with them - I’ve done that a few times now.

Honestly, these sort of gift cards or vouchers are usually meant just for buying stuff or services directly from the company that gave them out. Yet loads of folks get caught out because they don’t really get how these scams operate. Legit companies would never tell you to pay bills or debts with vouchers or gift cards. It’s best not to give out the codes on any vouchers you’ve got unless you’re putting them in on the official site as payment for something.

When I asked where she got my number from, she replied “the UK administration” or something like that - sounds dodgy to me! The text arrived from a site called claimvoucher[###], so I searched it and found a website asking for my full name, address, income info and how many kids I have.
