This con is pretty old, it actually showed up a couple of times on a TV show about phone scams. Still manages to fool some unsuspecting parents who aren’t aware. The trick works because scammers exploit how kids these days prefer texting over talking. According to the police’s ACTION FRAUD site, if you get a phishing message, you should forward it to 7726. You can also take a screenshot or copy the message and email it to ‘[email protected]’.

Got a text from this number today saying, "Hi mum, did you see my earlier message about my phone? It’s playing up so I had to get a new one today. Can you text me back when you get this x" I was suspicious straight away because none of my kids messaged me like that and there was no earlier message from this person at all. Definitely smelled like a scam to me.

Got a call from someone saying 'Hi Mum', asking to borrow about £1500 and promised to pay me back the next day. They even sent me bank details for a personal account and said it was urgent. I managed to screenshot the entire chat just in case. The name on the caller ID was Aaron D Gill. Bit suspicious if you ask me.
