I picked up as I couldn’t find anything about the number online and thought it might be genuine, but it turned out to be a robocall with an American accent saying it was HMRC. They claimed a letter they’d sent me got sent back to them. The number didn’t seem linked to the official department at all, they wouldn’t be ringing from a mobile phone. So, I blocked and reported it straight away.

I received a rather dubious call from what seemed to be a robotic voice purporting to represent HMRC, stating that I was being prosecuted due to a letter that had been returned. Quite unsettling, to say the least!

Usually, I avoid picking up calls from numbers I don't know, but for some odd reason, I answered one today. It turned out to be a robocall with a distinctly American twang, purporting to be from HMRC. They claimed they'd sent a letter that I apparently missed and that I was in danger of facing legal action. I've since blocked the number and reported it.
