I saw this old scam on a Channel 5 show called 'phone scams don’t get caught out', might still be up on my5 somewhere. Turns out it’s still fooling people who aren’t aware of it.

Beware, this is definitely a scam. I got a text claiming something like: "Hey dad, just wanted to say I smashed my phone badly earlier, screen’s proper cracked. I’m using my old phone now but it’s super old and I can’t hear properly. I’d ring you but this phone’s useless. Luckily I’ve got insurance so a new one should arrive in a couple days." Don’t trust it, it’s a trick.
