11 yearsI got a call from some bloke named Malcolm Banks who claimed to be with the County Court Enforcement Team. He told me bailiffs were heading to my place within the hour to collect a debt, plus interest and their fee. He even said if I couldn’t pay, they’d use some “something and seizure” warrant to take stuff like my car and TV. He said the debt was from a company called Petrie Media, and gave me bank details to pay up. I told him I didn’t know anything about it, but he said it didn’t matter because they supposedly had legal papers. I was pretty freaked out and couldn’t think clearly. Then, within 15 minutes, I got another call from someone pretending to be the bailiffs, saying they were on their way. I panicked, got in my car, and drove off. Luckily I didn’t pay a penny. After I’d calmed down and thought about it, it didn’t add up at all. He couldn’t give me a proper county court reference. Apparently, in real life, they have to give you 7 days notice before they come to your house, but he claimed I’d ignored the paperwork. The payment info was in the name of a guy called C Petrie, not the actual company, which felt dodgy. I checked with the county court he said he was from and they said he wasn’t on their staff list. I was still so scared they might turn up, I picked my son up from college myself and we went for dinner because I didn’t want to go back home alone (my partner’s away for work). I’ve had more scammy calls since then, mostly from blocked numbers, and it’s driving me nuts. I don’t want to ignore any in case they’re genuine clients trying to get in touch.
