I recently had a rather alarming phone call from a chap named Malcolm Banks, who claimed to represent the County Court Enforcement Team. He ominously informed me that bailiffs were en route to my home, supposedly to collect an outstanding debt plus interest, along with their fees. They mentioned that if I couldn’t settle the amount, they held a “seizure and sale” warrant, allowing them to take my possessions, you know, like my car or television. They even provided bank details for a payment to a company called Petrie Media, which I allegedly owed money to from invoices over the past year. In a complete state of confusion, I insisted I had no knowledge of this supposed debt, to which he responded, rather dismissively, that it didn’t matter because they had all the necessary legal documentation. Panic set in, clouding my thoughts. The situation escalated further when I received a call from the “bailiffs” merely fifteen minutes later, claiming they were on their way. At that point, I hopped in my car and fled the house, completely rattled. Fortunately, I refrained from handing over any money, as once I had a moment to compose myself, the whole affair reeked of illegitimacy. For starters, the caller couldn’t provide a county court reference, and I know full well that I’m entitled to seven days' notice before any visit. He mentioned that papers were sent to me, which I apparently ignored, but I found that hard to believe. The payment details he provided didn’t even match the company’s name, but rather a “C Petrie,” which felt off. I highlighted various inconsistencies and, upon checking with the county court he represented, they confirmed he wasn’t associated with them at all. I was so anxious about the prospect of someone actually showing up that I decided to pick up my son from school myself, and we ended up having dinner out to avoid returning home, especially since my partner is currently away for work. Throughout the week, I continued to receive additional scam calls from unidentified numbers, which has left me utterly frazzled. I can’t simply ignore them, as I worry they might be genuine clients trying to book my services. I truly hope sharing this experience aids someone else in recognising a scam - the caller was supposedly from the County Court Enforcement Team.
