Got a text from someone claiming to be my kid saying they've got a new phone number. Felt a bit off, like one of those scams where they try to trick you into sending money or something. Definitely not a message I’m falling for. Just be careful if you see something like this!

Got a dodgy text pretending to be from my daughter saying she’s switched her phone provider to Tesco and that her old number’s dead now. It asked me to text a new number so she could update her contacts. Obviously smells like a scam, so I’m reporting that phone number straight away.

Got a text a couple hours back, pretty much the same story but this time they said they switched to Tesco as their provider. Honestly, it’s dead obvious a con. My kid never calls me ‘mum’, always ‘mom’. If it really was them, they’d have my number already, so why would they ask me to send my info to a different number? Plus, my kid always ends messages with a couple of kisses, not just one. Total giveaway.

Got a call from some fraudsters saying they switched my service provider or something like that.

This has to be a scam - they claim to be your kid saying they've switched phone companies and that their old number doesn't work, so they want you to text them your info. I got one of these messages early on a Sunday, totally daft because there’s no way my children would be awake then. Definitely dodgy.

If you get scam calls or texts, report the number to 7726. This helps the phone companies flag dodgy numbers across their systems. Sadly, the usual way to report scams directly to the police via the Action Fraud website isn’t available anymore - they shut that down, maybe to save money? You might want to raise that with your MP if you’re bothered. You can still send screenshots of scam messages to the cyber crime unit by emailing '[email protected]', on top of forwarding them to 7726.
