These scams and their many versions have been around for ages. I saw it pop up in a couple of those scam shows on telly recently. Even with loads of press and TV alerts, plenty of folks still fall for it and lose a lot of money. Hardly any of these dodgy calls or messages get reported though. If you want to report suspicious texts, you can forward them to 7726. And for dodgy phone calls, just send a text to that number as well, according to the police's Action Fraud site.

Just received a text saying “my phone’s overheating dad” and I’m a woman with no kids, so honestly no clue who they thought they were messaging! Pretty confusing tbh.
