They even called me during the England match - that was the last straw, so I just didn’t pick up. What’s happened to the rules against cold calls? This number has called me twice in the last week. The first time, it was dead silent, no one spoke. The second time, I got a recorded message from a woman with an English accent talking about some "window replacement" offer. She said there are lots of old windows that are draughty and leaking rain, and you can swap them for new ones. At the end, she told me to press 5 for more details or 8 to stop getting calls from them. It felt a bit annoying, and I nearly pressed 8, but figured that’s just what they want so I didn’t. Instead, I hung up and dialled 1471 to see where the call came from.

I just stayed quiet like I always do with unknown numbers. After a couple of seconds, the call just dropped. If someone legit is calling, they usually start talking in case you missed their ring. But robocalls hang up if they don't hear you say anything. Loads of those Indian internet scams, BT imposters, and spam calls get caught out this way. If it’s a proper call centre, you’ll often hear them chatting in the background, probably running some dodgy operation.

Didn’t get a voicemail, just hung up. If they ask you to press a number to stop calls, don’t do it - that usually just confirms your number’s active and you’ll get more. Better to just block the number straight away.

If you’re with BT, you can use their call protect for free to stop these annoying calls. You don’t even need a smartphone or a computer for it. You just turn the filters on or off straight from your phone to block or filter unwanted numbers. I’ve already stopped more than 600 calls with it, so it really works!
