Honestly, ringing back numbers you don't recognise is just asking for trouble. Only a complete muppet would bother doing that. There’s loads of reasons why it’s a bad idea. For starters, it might be some twist on that old wangiri scam. Plus, scammers generate millions of fake numbers automatically, so the chance you call one that’s actually in use by an innocent person or even a real company is pretty high. Looks like this particular number is linked to British Gas engineers, so it’s not dodgy itself. It’s just that scammers have started spoofing it.

Got a call from 07584771752 claiming to be Natwest. But when I tried ringing back, some bloke answered saying he was a British Gas engineer. Sounds like a scam to me, with these fraudsters messing around by swapping the phone lines or numbers.

On the 10th of December 2023 around 7:37pm, I got a call from this number. I ended it as soon as it went to my voicemail.
